Weather – The national capital experienced a spell of intense rain and thunderstorms on Tuesday night, leading the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue an orange alert. Authorities urged residents to stay cautious and be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions.

Delhi thunderstorms unseasonal april chill

Sudden Weather Shift Brings Cooler Conditions

Cloudy skies and intermittent rain showers persisted throughout the day, creating an unusually cool atmosphere for April. The drop in temperature stood out, making it one of the chilliest days for the month in the last three years. The overcast conditions prevented temperatures from rising, offering brief relief from early summer heat.

Rainfall Recorded Across Key Monitoring Stations

According to IMD data, several weather stations across Delhi recorded light rainfall between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm. Safdarjung and Lodhi Road each received 3 mm of rainfall, while Palam and Ridge recorded 2.1 mm each. Ayanagar reported slightly lower precipitation at 2 mm during the same period. Though the rainfall was not heavy, it was enough to significantly influence the day’s temperature and overall weather pattern.

Daytime Temperatures Fall Below Seasonal Average

The maximum temperature in the city settled at 28.8 degrees Celsius, which is noticeably lower than the usual levels for this time of year. This reading is comparable to April 1, 2023, when a similar dip brought the temperature down to 28.4 degrees Celsius. Other parts of the city also reported below-normal daytime temperatures, with Palam recording a high of 27.6 degrees Celsius. Lodhi Road, Ridge, and Ayanagar followed a similar trend, reflecting the widespread cooling effect of the rainfall.

Night Temperatures Remain Stable

Minimum temperatures across Delhi remained close to normal or slightly below. Safdarjung, the city’s primary weather station, recorded a minimum temperature of 20.1 degrees Celsius. This indicates that while daytime conditions cooled significantly, nighttime temperatures did not see a drastic deviation from expected levels.

Forecast Indicates Continued Cloud Cover and Rain

Weather officials have predicted that the city may continue to experience thunderstorms along with light to moderate rainfall on Wednesday. Cloudy skies are expected to persist, keeping temperatures relatively lower than usual for early April. The minimum temperature is likely to hover around 17 degrees Celsius, while the maximum could remain close to 28 degrees Celsius.

Air Quality Remains Moderate Despite Weather Change

Despite the rainfall and improved atmospheric conditions, Delhi’s air quality stayed within the ‘moderate’ category. The Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 114, according to data released by the Central Pollution Control Board. While rain often helps reduce pollution levels, the improvement in air quality remained limited in this instance.

Advisory for Residents

Authorities have advised residents to remain alert, especially during thunderstorms, which may be accompanied by gusty winds. Commuters and those stepping outdoors are encouraged to check weather updates and plan accordingly to avoid inconvenience.

The recent spell of rain highlights the unpredictable nature of seasonal transitions in Delhi, where sudden weather changes can bring both relief and challenges for residents.
