Development – YSRCP Accuses TDP of Diverting Focus from Regional Growth Debate

Development – Leaders of the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) have launched a sharp attack on ABN Andhra Jyothi Managing Director Radhakrishna and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, alleging that attempts are being made to divert public attention from discussions around an alternative regional development strategy. According to them, growing public interest in the MAVIGUN model proposed by YS Jagan Mohan Reddy is being deliberately sidelined through political and media narratives.

Allegations of Distraction Tactics

At a press briefing held in Visakhapatnam, senior YSRCP figures, including former ministers Kurasala Kannababu and Gudivada Amarnath, along with other party representatives, accused sections of the media and the ruling leadership of resorting to personal criticism instead of addressing policy questions. They claimed that such tactics are being used to avoid responding to concerns raised about the Amaravati capital project.

The leaders further alleged that media coverage has shifted focus away from substantive debates on development, instead highlighting personal issues involving opposition members. They described this as a calculated effort to weaken discussions on alternative governance and infrastructure strategies.

MAVIGUN Model Presented as Practical Alternative

The YSRCP reiterated its support for the MAVIGUN development concept, which links Machilipatnam, Vijayawada, and Guntur as a unified growth zone. According to party representatives, the region already benefits from key infrastructure such as a port, an operational airport, and established national highways.

They argued that this existing foundation would significantly reduce the cost and time required for development. In contrast, they said that building Amaravati into a full-fledged capital would require extensive investment in infrastructure from the ground up.

The leaders estimated that while Amaravati may require investments running into several lakh crores, the MAVIGUN model could be implemented with comparatively lower expenditure, making it a more feasible option in the current economic scenario.

Questions Raised on Amaravati Spending

YSRCP leaders also questioned the financial planning behind Amaravati. They pointed out that during previous years in power, the government reportedly spent only around Rs 8,000 crore on the project. However, current projections suggest that nearly Rs 2 lakh crore may be needed to complete it.

They expressed concern over the long timelines associated with such large-scale spending, stating that it could take decades before Amaravati becomes fully functional. In comparison, they described the MAVIGUN approach as quicker to implement and capable of delivering economic benefits in a shorter time frame.

Criticism Over Regional Imbalance

The party also raised concerns about what it described as uneven regional development. Leaders claimed that areas such as North Andhra and Rayalaseema had not received adequate attention in earlier development plans. They noted that recent discussions about broader development corridors emerged only after the MAVIGUN proposal began gaining public attention.

Additionally, they questioned the lack of response from ruling party members to criticisms labeling Amaravati as an exclusive or limited-access capital. According to them, a capital city should reflect inclusivity and represent all regions equally.

Concerns Over Governance and Transparency

YSRCP representatives alleged that the Amaravati project has been associated with issues such as inflated contracts, irregularities in design processes, and financial mismanagement. They also highlighted concerns regarding unfulfilled commitments made to farmers who had contributed land for the capital project.

Further, they stated that legislative procedures related to Amaravati lacked adequate debate and scrutiny, raising questions about transparency in decision-making. According to them, these factors have contributed to public skepticism about the project.

Demand for Clarification

The party leaders called on Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu to provide clear answers regarding the financial sustainability and long-term feasibility of Amaravati. They also urged media representatives to maintain responsible reporting standards and avoid content that could be seen as inappropriate or defamatory.

Reaffirming their position, YSRCP leaders stated that their opposition is not directed at any specific region but at what they perceive as flawed implementation and planning. They emphasized that balanced regional development remains central to their vision for the state.

According to them, the MAVIGUN model offers a more inclusive and economically viable path forward, aligning infrastructure growth with existing resources and regional needs.
