Elections – Gadkari Urges Strong Mandate in Assam Amid Immigration Debate
Elections – Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Thursday called on voters in Assam to support the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the upcoming state elections, emphasizing the need to address the issue of illegal immigration. Speaking at a public gathering in Guwahati, he underlined that safeguarding national interests and ensuring regional development require firm action against unauthorized entry into the country.

Focus on Illegal Immigration and National Interest
During his address, Gadkari highlighted that no sovereign nation permits unrestricted or unlawful entry of foreign nationals. He questioned whether individuals entering the country without authorization should be granted voting rights, asserting that such practices could undermine governance and development. According to him, controlling illegal immigration is essential not only for Assam’s progress but also for the broader national interest.
He appealed to voters to consider these concerns while casting their ballots, stating that a decisive mandate would help ensure stability and development. Gadkari stressed that the issue goes beyond politics and directly impacts economic growth, security, and administrative efficiency in the region.
Clarification on Religious Angle
Earlier in the day, Gadkari addressed concerns that actions against illegal immigrants might be interpreted as targeting a particular community. He clarified that such measures are not directed at any religion and should not be viewed through a communal lens. He reiterated that the government’s position is focused on legality and citizenship, not faith.
He also stated that Muslims residing legally in Assam are not the target of any policy action. The distinction, he explained, lies between lawful residents and those who have entered the country without authorization. According to him, ensuring that voting rights are reserved for legitimate citizens is a matter of national policy.
Criticism of Opposition Parties
Gadkari accused opposition groups of politicizing the issue for electoral gain. He suggested that some parties are attempting to present the matter in a communal light to consolidate vote banks, rather than addressing it as a governance concern. In his remarks, he emphasized that national issues should not be used as tools for political advantage.
He further noted that countries around the world take action against illegal entrants, and India should be no exception. Maintaining a clear and consistent approach, he said, is necessary for upholding the rule of law.
Upcoming Assam Elections
Assam is scheduled to hold single-phase विधानसभा elections on April 9, covering all 126 constituencies in the state. The BJP, along with its allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), is aiming to return to power for a third consecutive term.
On the other side, the Congress has formed a broad alliance with several regional and left parties, including Assam Jati Parishad (AJP), Raijor Dal, CPI(M), CPI(ML), and the All Party Hill Leaders Conference. This coalition is positioning itself as a united front to challenge the ruling alliance.
Counting and Political Stakes
The results of the election will be announced on May 4, a date that is expected to play a crucial role in determining the political direction of the state. With multiple parties and alliances competing, the outcome will reflect how voters respond to key issues such as development, governance, and immigration.
As campaigning intensifies, leaders from all sides continue to present their agendas, seeking to connect with voters across Assam. The election is being closely watched, given its implications for both state and national politics.
