Education – Delhi Government Expands Support for Girls with Bicycle Initiative
Education – Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Thursday rolled out a new initiative aimed at supporting school-going girls by distributing bicycles to 1,100 students from nine schools across the capital. The move is part of a broader push to improve access to education and strengthen welfare measures for young girls.

Focus on Access to Education
Addressing the gathering, Gupta highlighted that her administration is placing strong emphasis on programmes that empower girls and women. She pointed to provisions in the recently presented Delhi budget, stating that several schemes have been designed to enhance opportunities and reduce barriers faced by female students.
The bicycle distribution programme, she said, is intended to make daily travel to school easier and safer, especially for those who face difficulties commuting over long distances.
Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana Explained
Gupta also spoke about the Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana, a financial assistance scheme aimed at supporting girls from birth through their education journey. Under this initiative, monetary support will be provided at key stages of a girl’s life, including at birth, during entry into Classes 1, 6, 9, and 12, as well as throughout her college years.
According to the Chief Minister, by the time a beneficiary completes her graduation, she is expected to receive cumulative financial support of around Rs 1.25 lakh. The scheme is designed to ease financial pressures on families while encouraging continued education for girls.
Annual Bicycle Distribution Plan
The government plans to expand the bicycle programme significantly. Each year, all girls entering Class 9 in Delhi government schools will receive bicycles, benefiting an estimated 1.3 lakh students annually.
Gupta clarified that while Class 9 students will receive bicycles under the official government scheme, the bicycles distributed to Class 10 students this time were provided as part of her personal initiative.
Steps Towards Women’s Economic Independence
In addition to education-focused measures, the Delhi government is also taking steps to promote financial independence among women. Gupta announced that 1,000 new auto-rickshaw permits will be issued exclusively to women drivers.
These vehicles, referred to as ‘pink autos’, are expected to create employment opportunities while also contributing to safer public transport options for women passengers.
Broader Vision for Women Empowerment
The initiatives unveiled reflect a wider policy direction aimed at improving both educational access and economic participation for women in Delhi. By addressing transportation challenges and providing structured financial support, the government hopes to create a more inclusive environment where girls can pursue education without interruption.
Officials indicated that such schemes are likely to be expanded further based on feedback and implementation outcomes in the coming months
