Worli : Tragic Road Accident in Claims Life of 18-Year-Old College Student
Worli : A heartbreaking road accident in Mumbai’s Worli area led to the death of an 18-year-old youth after he was run over by a city bus on Wednesday evening. The incident has once again raised serious concerns about road safety, public transport responsibility, and the vulnerability of young commuters in busy urban areas. The deceased has been identified as Adnan Ijaz Sheikh, a college student who was also working part-time to support his family.

Incident Overview and Location Details
The fatal accident took place at around 7:15 pm near Rakhangi Chowk on Dr. E. Moses Road, close to the Christian Cemetery crematorium in Worli. This stretch of road is known for heavy traffic during evening hours, with buses, two-wheelers, and pedestrians sharing limited space. According to preliminary information, a public transport bus struck Adnan’s motorcycle while he was returning home from work.
Family Background and Personal Circumstances
Adnan belonged to a modest household struggling with financial challenges. His mother, Laxmi Yellappa Golhar, also known as Adiba Ejaz Sheikh, works as a domestic help and currently resides in the Gandhinagar area of Worli. She had entered into a love marriage in 2006 and chose to retain her original name in official records, as she continued to follow her traditional customs.
As the eldest son, Adnan understood the financial pressures faced by his family at a young age. Despite being only 18, he took responsibility seriously and balanced his education with work. His untimely death has left the family emotionally shattered and financially uncertain.
Education and Part-Time Employment
Adnan was pursuing First Year Commerce at a reputed college in Girgaon. Known among friends and neighbors as a hardworking and sincere youth, he had taken up a part-time job at a flex printing shop owned by a local businessman. This job helped him contribute to daily household expenses while continuing his studies.
On the day of the accident, Adnan had left home at around 2 pm for work, following his usual routine. There were no signs or indications that the day would end in tragedy.
Sequence of Events Leading to the Accident
While returning home on his motorcycle in the evening, Adnan reached the Christian Cemetery area when a city bus reportedly rammed into his bike. The force of the collision caused the motorcycle to skid uncontrollably, throwing him onto the road. Tragically, he fell under the wheel of the bus and suffered severe crush injuries.
Eyewitnesses at the scene described the incident as sudden and shocking. Passersby and local residents immediately rushed to help and arranged for Adnan to be transported to a nearby hospital in an attempt to save his life.
Medical Response and Declaration of Death
Adnan was taken to Nair Hospital for emergency treatment. Unfortunately, due to the severity of his injuries, doctors declared him dead on arrival. Medical professionals confirmed that the fatal injuries were caused by being crushed under the heavy vehicle, leaving little chance of survival despite the quick response.
The incident sent shockwaves through the local community, with residents expressing anger and sorrow over the loss of such a young life.
Police Action and Legal Proceedings
After receiving information about the accident, officers from the N.M. Joshi Marg Police Station arrived at the scene and initiated an investigation. It was revealed that the bus driver, Ajit Balu Khot, had himself taken the injured Adnan to the hospital following the accident.
Based on the complaint filed by Adnan’s mother, the police registered a case of rash and negligent driving against the bus driver. Authorities are currently examining CCTV footage, eyewitness statements, and vehicle condition reports as part of the ongoing investigation.
Growing Concerns Over Urban Road Safety
This tragic incident highlights the growing issue of road accidents involving public transport in metropolitan cities. Congested roads, strict schedules, and lack of accountability often result in fatal consequences for vulnerable road users such as two-wheeler riders.
Residents in the Worli area have demanded stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, better driver training, and improved monitoring systems to prevent such avoidable deaths in the future.
