Uttar Pradesh : Launches One District One Cuisine Scheme To Promote Local Food Heritage

Uttar Pradesh: The Government of Uttar Pradesh has taken a major step toward preserving and promoting its rich culinary heritage with the launch of the One District One Cuisine scheme. The initiative was officially unveiled by Amit Shah during the Uttar Pradesh Day celebrations held at Rashtriya Prerna Sthal. Designed as an extension of the already successful One District One Product program, this new policy focuses on identifying and promoting one signature dish from each of the state’s 75 districts, aiming to give local food traditions a national and global platform.

Linking Culinary Identity With Economic Growth

The One District One Cuisine initiative draws inspiration from the achievements of the ODOP program, which helped local crafts and products from Uttar Pradesh reach wider markets. By applying the same framework to traditional food, the state government intends to empower local halwais, home-based food entrepreneurs, street vendors, and small food processing units. These stakeholders will gain better access to training, financial support, branding assistance, and market expansion opportunities.

Officials believe that traditional cuisine can become a strong economic driver when supported through organized supply chains and modern marketing strategies. The scheme is expected to create sustainable employment at the grassroots level while strengthening the MSME ecosystem across the state.

Preserving Heritage Through Modern Standards

A key objective of the One District One Cuisine scheme is to preserve age-old recipes while ensuring they meet present-day quality and safety expectations. Under the program, one historically significant or culturally popular dish will be officially identified in every district. Artisans and chefs associated with these dishes will be registered to ensure traceability and consistency.

The government will also focus on food safety, hygiene compliance, standardized preparation methods, and modern packaging. Special attention will be given to geographical indication certification, geo-tagging, and export-friendly designs so that these products can compete in international markets without losing their traditional essence.

Focus on Nutrition and Sustainable Ingredients

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath highlighted that the scheme is not limited to taste alone but also prioritizes nutrition and sustainability. Millet-based foods and locally sourced ingredients will be encouraged, aligning with national goals of promoting healthy eating and sustainable agriculture. By combining traditional knowledge with modern food technology, the state aims to present Uttar Pradesh cuisine as both authentic and health-conscious.

Signature Dishes From Across The State

Uttar Pradesh is known for its extraordinary diversity of flavors, and the scheme brings many iconic dishes into the spotlight. Agra is represented by Panchhi Petha, while Mathura is known for Brajwasi Peda. Ayodhya’s Ramasare Peda, Aligarh’s Chamcham, and Barabanki’s Chandrakala reflect deep-rooted sweet-making traditions.

From eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bati Chokha and Litti Chokha showcase rustic flavors, while Lucknow contributes Revdi and Malai Makhan, both associated with the city’s rich culinary culture. Varanasi’s Launglata and Malaiyo, Sandila’s Laddu from Hardoi district, and Kanpur’s famous Samosa further highlight the variety that the state offers.

Global Recognition For Local Flavors

Many of these dishes are well-known within their regions but remain largely unfamiliar to international audiences. Through branding, digital marketing, and e-commerce integration, the One District One Cuisine scheme aims to change that. By creating a unified identity for Uttar Pradesh food products, the government hopes to position them competitively in global food markets.

The launch event was attended by senior state leaders including Deputy Chief Ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak, Tourism Minister Jaiveer Singh, and other top officials, signaling strong administrative support for the initiative. With this program, Uttar Pradesh is setting an example of how cultural heritage and economic development can move forward together.
