Earthquake – A mild earthquake measuring 3.7 on the Richter scale was recorded in Uttar Pradesh on Friday morning, briefly unsettling residents in and around the state capital, Lucknow. According to official data, the tremors occurred at 7:32 am and were felt across several districts, though no damage or injuries were reported. Authorities confirmed that the situation remained calm, with daily activities resuming shortly after the ground movement was noticed.

The National Center for Seismology stated that the epicentre of the earthquake was located in Gonda district, approximately 120 kilometres from Lucknow. The quake originated at a depth of 10 kilometres beneath the Earth’s surface, a relatively shallow depth that often allows tremors to be felt across a wider area. Residents in nearby towns reported light shaking lasting a few seconds, prompting momentary concern but no immediate emergencies.

Officials monitoring seismic activity noted that low-magnitude earthquakes are not uncommon in the region and are generally considered harmless. Local administrations remained in touch with disaster management teams as a precaution, but no follow-up advisories were required.

Early Morning Quake Triggers Panic in Sikkim

Earlier the same day, another earthquake of slightly higher intensity struck parts of Sikkim, adding to a series of minor seismic events recorded across the country. The tremor, measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale, occurred at around 1:09 am and was centred near the Gyalshing region in western Sikkim.

The sudden shaking, felt in the middle of the night, caused brief panic among residents. Many people rushed out of their homes as a safety measure, fearing possible aftershocks. Streets and open areas saw people gathering for several minutes until the tremors subsided. Despite the anxiety, authorities confirmed that there were no reports of structural damage or casualties.

Local officials advised residents to remain alert but calm, noting that aftershocks, if any, were expected to be mild. Emergency services remained on standby through the early hours of the morning to respond to any potential issues.

Seismologists continue to track tectonic activity across different regions, especially in areas that fall within active seismic zones. Both Uttar Pradesh and Sikkim experience periodic low-intensity earthquakes due to their geological positioning, though the underlying causes vary.
