UP STF-made arrests
Known for focusing on organized crime, the STF moved quickly to apprehend Abhishek and Shubham Sharma for reportedly trafficking codeine syrup for recreational use. The Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) and the Uttar Pradesh Police conducted a larger investigation that included their arrest.

Finding important suspects and expanding the inquiry
More than ten major suspects have been identified by authorities as being involved in the illicit codeine syrup trade. Manufacturers, distributors, transporters, and local operators are said to play a variety of functions in this organized network, coordinating across numerous districts and even states.

During their investigations into the unlawful sale and diversion of codeine-based syrups, the state government’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) discovered this well-coordinated nexus.

Numerous searches and FIRs
More than 128 FIRs have been filed against different businesses and people connected to this illicit pharmaceutical trade so far. In Uttar Pradesh, this comprehensive move represents the biggest government crackdown on such illegal enterprises to date.

While the inquiry also entails examining financial transactions and interstate links that enable the trafficking, raids are being carried out at other places to capture more individuals.

The government’s unwavering position
Following allegations of codeine cough syrup abuse from other states, the Uttar Pradesh government has taken suo motu cognizance of the matter. In response, the level of enforcement has increased.

The leader of the SIT, Inspector General of Police (Law and Order), LR Kumar, affirmed the government’s zero-tolerance policy. “The chief minister has directed that no person involved, regardless of position or influence, will be spared,” he said.

As the SIT conducts its thorough searches and investigations, more arrests and revelations are anticipated. In order to stop more abuse of codeine syrups, which present serious health dangers to the public, authorities are still committed to taking down the whole network.
