Football – Late Strike Rescues Jamshedpur FC in Hard-Fought Delhi Clash

JFootball –  amshedpur FC secured a crucial point with a dramatic late goal to draw 1-1 against Sporting Club Delhi in their Indian Super League 2025–26 encounter at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Thursday. Nikola Stojanovic’s stoppage-time effort denied the home side a win after Joseph Sunny had earlier given Delhi the advantage.

Early Exchanges Set Competitive Tone

The match began with both sides showing attacking intent. Delhi goalkeeper Nora Fernandes was called into action within the opening minutes, clearing a dangerous free-kick delivery from Stojanovic. Midfield battles dominated the early phase, with both teams attempting shots from distance but struggling to break through disciplined defensive lines.

Ousmane Fane tested Jamshedpur’s goalkeeper Albino Gomes with a long-range attempt, while Rei Tachikawa’s effort at the other end was handled comfortably. The opening quarter reflected a balanced contest, with neither side able to gain clear control.

Delhi Capitalises on Defensive Lapse

The breakthrough came in the 21st minute, following a moment of uncertainty in Jamshedpur’s defense. A cross into the penalty area led to a weak clearance by Gomes, creating confusion inside the box. After an initial scramble, Joseph Sunny reacted quickest, striking the ball cleanly into the top corner to give Sporting Club Delhi the lead.

Buoyed by the goal, the home team pushed forward in search of a second. Matija Babovic came close shortly after but failed to convert from a tight angle. Delhi’s attacking play showed promise, though it lacked precision in the final third.

Jamshedpur Responds Before the Break

Jamshedpur gradually found their rhythm as the first half progressed. Mohammed Sanan emerged as a key threat on the left flank, testing Fernandes with a powerful shot from distance before missing a close-range opportunity after an impressive solo run.

Raphael Messi Bouli also had a chance to equalise just before halftime but dragged his shot wide from inside the box. Despite creating several opportunities, Jamshedpur went into the interval trailing 1-0, largely due to missed chances and Delhi’s organised defense.

Rain Disrupts Second-Half Flow

Heavy rainfall after the break made conditions difficult for both teams. The pitch became challenging, affecting passing accuracy and overall tempo. As a result, clear scoring chances were limited, with much of the play confined to midfield tussles.

Bouli attempted another long-range effort but failed to find the target. Delhi, meanwhile, looked to protect their lead while occasionally threatening on the counterattack.

Goalkeepers Keep Contest Alive

The game remained finely poised as both sides searched for decisive moments. In the 74th minute, Augustine Lalrochana tested Gomes with a low drive, but the goalkeeper produced a sharp save to keep Jamshedpur in contention.

At the other end, Stojanovic continued to be influential, forcing a save from Fernandes in the closing stages. Jamshedpur increased pressure as time ran out, committing more players forward in search of an equaliser.

Late Drama Seals the Outcome

With just moments remaining, Jamshedpur finally found the breakthrough. Stojanovic struck from outside the penalty area, and his shot, aided by a slight deflection, slipped past Fernandes at the near post to level the score.

The late goal shifted momentum, but neither side could produce a winner in the final seconds. Jamshedpur attempted to press through the right flank, while Delhi looked to exploit counterattacks, but both defenses held firm.

Points Shared in Tight Contest

The final whistle confirmed a 1-1 draw, reflecting the competitive nature of the match. Jamshedpur FC retained their position near the top of the standings with 13 points, while Sporting Club Delhi moved to 12 points after earning a hard-fought result.

Stojanovic’s late contribution proved decisive, not only securing a point for his team but also earning him the Player of the Match recognition.
