EuropaLeague – Freiburg Dominate Celta Vigo With Convincing First-Leg Victory
EuropaLeague – SC Freiburg delivered a commanding performance on home soil, defeating Celta Vigo 3-0 in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League quarterfinal clash, putting the German side in a strong position ahead of the return fixture in Spain.

Freiburg Set Early Tempo With Confident Start
Playing in their first-ever European quarterfinal, Freiburg showed no signs of nerves and immediately took control of the match. From the opening minutes, the home side applied relentless pressure, forcing Celta Vigo deep into their own half. Their aggressive approach paid off quickly, as they broke the deadlock within the first 10 minutes.
Vincenzo Grifo was instrumental in the opening goal. Finding space near the left side of the penalty area, he curled a shot toward the far corner. Although the ball took a slight deflection, it left goalkeeper Ionut Radu with little chance to react, giving Freiburg a deserved early advantage.
Midfield Control Leads to Second Goal
Rather than sitting back after taking the lead, Freiburg maintained their attacking intent. Their effective pressing in midfield disrupted Vigo’s attempts to build from the back and limited the visitors’ ability to launch counterattacks.
This dominance resulted in a second goal in the 32nd minute. Philipp Treu regained possession high up the pitch, catching Vigo off guard. Igor Matanovic then calmly squared the ball across the box to Niklas Beste, who finished from close range with ease, doubling Freiburg’s lead.
The German side continued to threaten before halftime. Johan Manzambi came close to extending the margin further when he drove forward and struck the post, leaving Vigo fortunate to go into the break trailing by only two goals.
Vigo Struggle to Respond After Break
Celta Vigo attempted to shift momentum early in the second half with tactical changes, including two substitutions. However, these adjustments had little impact on the overall flow of the game. Freiburg remained organized and disciplined, controlling possession and limiting the visitors’ opportunities.
While chances became less frequent for Freiburg during this period, they still looked the more composed side. Yuito Suzuki showed glimpses of attacking promise, while Vigo struggled to create clear openings.
The visitors’ best chance came around the 70th minute when Borja Iglesias attempted a shot from outside the penalty area, but his effort sailed just over the crossbar, reflecting a frustrating evening for the Spanish side.
Set-Piece Seals Comprehensive Victory
Freiburg eventually added a third goal, effectively sealing the outcome of the first leg. From a well-delivered corner by Beste, Matthias Ginter rose above the defense and headed the ball into the net, making it 3-0.
Late in the game, both sides had minor opportunities to alter the scoreline. Fer Lopez missed a chance for Vigo, while Freiburg’s Lucas Holer was denied by Radu. Despite these moments, the score remained unchanged, leaving Freiburg with a significant advantage heading into the second leg.
Captain Praises Team Performance
After the match, Freiburg captain Vincenzo Grifo praised his team’s display, highlighting their composure and determination throughout the game. He noted that the side played with maturity and made effective use of possession, which ultimately led to their scoring opportunities.
Grifo also emphasized the importance of the third goal, acknowledging that the return leg in Vigo is expected to be challenging despite their strong position.
With a three-goal cushion, Freiburg now travel to Spain with confidence, while Celta Vigo face an uphill task if they hope to overturn the deficit and keep their European campaign alive.
