Cricket – MS Dhoni Likely to Bid Farewell After IPL 2026 Season

Cricket –  Former India cricketer Robin Uthappa has indicated that the 2026 Indian Premier League season could mark the end of MS Dhoni’s illustrious playing career with Chennai Super Kings. The veteran wicketkeeper-batter, who has been a central figure in the franchise’s success, is expected to gradually step back, allowing the team to transition into a new era under Ruturaj Gaikwad’s leadership.

Focus on Leadership Transition at Chennai Super Kings

Uthappa believes Chennai Super Kings should continue to back Ruturaj Gaikwad as captain rather than considering alternatives such as Sanju Samson. According to him, Gaikwad needs time and space to establish himself fully in the leadership role, especially after taking over captaincy duties in 2024.

He emphasized that Gaikwad is still evolving as a leader and must be allowed to operate independently, away from Dhoni’s towering influence. A gradual shift in responsibilities, with Dhoni taking on a less active on-field role, could help Gaikwad grow into a confident and self-reliant captain.

Dhoni’s Role Expected to Evolve in Final Season

At 44, Dhoni is set to feature in his 19th IPL season, a remarkable milestone in itself. Uthappa suggested that the veteran could adopt a hybrid role this year, contributing both as a player and a mentor. This transition may include batting lower down the order, possibly at number eight, instead of his usual finishing positions.

Such a move would not only reduce the physical demands on Dhoni but also signal a deliberate effort to phase himself out of the playing XI. It would allow younger players to take on more responsibility while benefiting from his guidance behind the scenes.

Future Options Remain Open for CSK

While backing Gaikwad strongly, Uthappa acknowledged that Chennai Super Kings would still have options if things do not go as planned. With experienced players like Sanju Samson available, the franchise could reconsider leadership choices in the future. However, for now, continuity and patience appear to be the preferred approach.

Concerns Raised Over Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Balance

Shifting focus to Sunrisers Hyderabad, Uthappa expressed doubts about their chances of winning the IPL title this season. While their aggressive batting style has been entertaining, he pointed out that it may not be enough to secure consistent victories without a dependable bowling unit.

In his assessment, strong bowling performances are often the deciding factor in championship-winning campaigns. He noted that Hyderabad’s bowling lineup currently lacks the depth and effectiveness needed to support their high-risk batting approach.

Injury Setbacks Add to SRH’s Challenges

Sunrisers Hyderabad are already dealing with key injury concerns ahead of the tournament. Regular captain Pat Cummins and bowler Eshan Malinga are reportedly unavailable for the initial phase, which could further weaken the team’s balance.

With Ishan Kishan expected to lead the side, SRH will begin their campaign against defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru on March 28. The opening fixture at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium is likely to test their readiness early in the competition.

Batting Strength Not Enough Without Bowling Support

Uthappa highlighted that Hyderabad’s home conditions favor batting, making it even more important to have bowlers who can adapt and execute smart strategies. He cited the need for experienced and skillful bowlers who can vary pace, swing the ball, and deliver under pressure.

Reflecting on the previous season, he pointed out that the team struggled whenever their top-order batters failed to deliver. Without adequate bowling support, they were unable to defend totals or control matches effectively.

Title Aspirations Remain Uncertain

Given these concerns, Uthappa does not see Sunrisers Hyderabad as strong contenders for the IPL trophy this season. While their attacking style brings excitement, a lack of balance between batting and bowling could limit their progress in crucial matches.
