Cricket – Irfan Pathan Suggests Balanced LSG Line-Up Ahead of IPL 2026 Season
Cricket – Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has shared his preferred playing combination for the upcoming Indian Premier League season, which is scheduled to begin on March 28. His suggested line-up reflects a balanced approach, focusing on stability in batting and strengthening the bowling unit.

LSG Focuses on Strengthening Weak Bowling Unit
Lucknow Super Giants, who ended their previous campaign in seventh place, have made several strategic changes to their squad ahead of the new season. One of their key priorities has been improving their bowling attack, which struggled in IPL 2025.
To address this concern, the franchise brought in experienced pacer Mohammad Shami and Arjun Tendulkar through trades. Additionally, they secured Wanindu Hasaranga and Anrich Nortje during the auction, adding both pace and spin depth to the squad.
Opening Pair Should Remain Unchanged
There has been speculation around captain Rishabh Pant possibly opening the innings. However, Pathan believes that the team should continue with Aiden Markram and Mitchell Marsh at the top of the order.
According to him, the overseas duo performed well in the previous season and provide stability at the start. He also suggested that home conditions should favor seam bowling, which would further benefit both openers.
Pant Best Suited for Number Three Role
Pathan recommended that Rishabh Pant should bat at number three instead of opening. He explained that this position allows Pant to assess match conditions before building his innings.
Batting at this spot also gives Pant the flexibility to either anchor the innings or accelerate depending on the situation, especially if an early wicket falls.
Concerns Over Pooran’s Recent Form
Nicholas Pooran has been placed at number four in Pathan’s line-up, although the former cricketer acknowledged a dip in the wicketkeeper-batter’s recent performances.
Despite the concerns, Pathan pointed out that Pooran has enjoyed playing for Lucknow and could regain form during the tournament.
Indian Core Strengthens Lower Order
Pathan has opted for a largely Indian lower middle-order, highlighting the rise of Ayush Badoni, who has shown consistent improvement and even earned a national call-up.
The middle and lower order also includes Abdul Samad, Himmat Singh, and Shahbaz Ahmed, providing depth and flexibility. He also mentioned that M Siddharth could be considered depending on team balance.
Bowling Combination Offers Variety
For the bowling unit, Pathan selected Mohammad Shami and Avesh Khan as the primary fast bowlers, supported by spinner Digvesh Rathi. He also noted that players like Shahbaz Ahmed and Ayush Badoni could contribute as part-time bowling options.
This combination, according to him, gives the team a mix of experience and emerging talent.
Multiple Impact Player Options Available
Pathan suggested several choices for the impact player role, offering flexibility based on match conditions. His options include Mayank Yadav, Anrich Nortje, Mohsin Khan, Naman Tiwari, and Prince Yadav.
This variety allows the team management to adapt quickly during matches, depending on whether they need additional batting depth or bowling strength.
Suggested Playing XI
Pathan’s proposed starting eleven includes Aiden Markram, Mitchell Marsh, Rishabh Pant, Nicholas Pooran, Ayush Badoni, Abdul Samad, Himmat Singh, Shahbaz Ahmed or M Siddharth, Mohammad Shami, Avesh Khan, and Digvesh Rathi.
With a stronger bowling attack and a balanced batting order, Lucknow Super Giants will be aiming to improve their performance and make a deeper impact in IPL 2026.
