Cricket – India Crowned T20 World Cup Champions as ICC Reveals Prize Distribution

Cricket – India’s triumph at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 has not only delivered another global title but also secured the team the largest share of the tournament’s substantial prize fund. The International Cricket Council confirmed that the champions will receive USD 2.63 million from the total players’ prize pool of USD 11.25 million, marking one of the most financially rewarding editions in the tournament’s history.

India t20 world cup prize money distribution

The announcement came shortly after India sealed victory against New Zealand in the final at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium. The win concluded a dominant campaign and highlighted the ICC’s expanded financial structure for major events introduced in recent years.

Record Prize for Tournament Winners

According to the ICC’s official distribution, India will collect USD 2,639,423 for lifting the trophy. This payout represents a significant rise compared with the prize money offered in the 2024 edition of the tournament, reflecting the governing body’s commitment to increasing financial rewards for participating teams.

New Zealand, which finished as runners-up after reaching the final, will earn USD 1,422,692. Despite falling short in the title match, the team’s strong performance throughout the competition secured them the second-largest share of the prize pool.

The two semi-finalists who missed out on the final also received substantial payouts. South Africa will receive USD 1,005,577, while England will take home USD 974,423 for their semifinal finishes.

Rewards for Super Eight Participants

Several teams that advanced to the Super Eight stage but did not reach the semi-finals also received notable prize money. The West Indies secured USD 538,269 after their campaign ended in the second stage of the tournament.

Pakistan earned USD 522,692, while Zimbabwe received USD 491,538 for their performances. Sri Lanka collected USD 475,962 after also exiting during the Super Eight phase.

Other teams that reached the Super Eight round but did not progress further were awarded smaller yet significant sums. Afghanistan, Australia, and the United States each received USD 309,808 as recognition for advancing beyond the group stage.

Payments for Group Stage Participants

Teams that competed in the tournament but finished outside the Super Eight bracket were also included in the financial distribution.

Scotland earned USD 278,654, while Ireland received USD 271,731 for their participation and results in the earlier rounds.

Four other teams—Italy, the Netherlands, the United Arab Emirates, and Nepal—were each awarded USD 256,154 following their group-stage campaigns.

Meanwhile, Canada, Namibia, and Oman exited the competition at an early stage but still secured the base participation payment provided to every team in the tournament. Each of these sides will receive USD 225,000.

How the ICC Calculated the Prize Pool

The ICC clarified that the figures announced represent the total prize money earned by teams throughout the entire tournament. The final amounts include the guaranteed participation payment, bonuses for match victories, and additional rewards based on how far a team progressed through the competition.

Every participating team received a starting payment of USD 225,000, ensuring financial support regardless of performance. Additional earnings were accumulated through wins in the group stage and advancement into later rounds such as the Super Eight, semi-finals, and final.

Tax and Compliance Considerations

While announcing the payouts, the ICC noted that all amounts listed represent gross prize money. The governing body emphasized that the figures are calculated before any applicable tax obligations or deductions required under international or local regulations.

The expanded prize structure introduced in recent years aims to strengthen the global appeal of the T20 format while providing greater financial incentives for teams competing at the highest level of international cricket.

India’s championship victory, combined with the record prize money, underscores the growing commercial and competitive significance of the ICC’s shortest-format world tournament.
