ChampionsLeague – Arsenal Secure Late Draw Against Leverkusen After Havertz Penalty

ChampionsLeague –  Arsenal rescued a late 1-1 draw against Bayer Leverkusen in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round-of-16 clash at the BayArena, with Kai Havertz converting a penalty just minutes before the final whistle. The German side had appeared set to take a narrow advantage into the return leg, but the late equalizer ensured the tie remains evenly balanced heading into the decisive match in London next week.

A cautious opening with limited chances

The match began cautiously, with both teams focusing on defensive organization rather than attacking risk. Leverkusen captain Robert Andrich was at the center of early action when he received a yellow card for pulling back Viktor Gyokeres just outside the penalty area. Moments later, he again came under scrutiny from referee Halil Umut Meler after another physical challenge, highlighting the tense nature of the early exchanges.

Arsenal controlled possession for long stretches during the first half, but breaking through Leverkusen’s disciplined defensive structure proved difficult. Clear scoring opportunities were rare as both teams maintained compact shapes and limited space in the attacking third.

Martinelli comes closest before halftime

Despite Arsenal’s territorial advantage, it was a moment of individual quality that produced the most dangerous chance of the opening period. Gabriel Martinelli finished a swift attacking move with a curling effort that struck the underside of the crossbar, leaving the Leverkusen defense momentarily exposed but ultimately relieved.

Leverkusen responded with occasional attacks of their own, with Ibrahim Maza attempting to create openings for the home side. However, neither team managed to convert their limited opportunities, and the first half ended without a goal.

Andrich header puts Leverkusen ahead

The breakthrough arrived almost immediately after the restart. Within seconds of the second half beginning, Martin Terrier forced Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya into an impressive save with a powerful header. The resulting corner from Alejandro Grimaldo caused problems inside the Arsenal penalty area.

At the far post, Robert Andrich reacted quickest and directed a header into the net from a tight angle, giving Leverkusen a valuable lead and energizing the home crowd.

Arsenal struggle to break down resilient defense

After conceding, Arsenal attempted to increase the tempo of their attacks but struggled to create sustained pressure. Leverkusen remained well organized defensively, closing down space and forcing the visitors to rely mainly on crosses and aerial deliveries.

Moments involving defenders Piero Hincapie and Jurrien Timber created brief concern in the Leverkusen box, yet the German side continued to manage the match calmly. For much of the second half, it appeared the hosts would successfully protect their narrow advantage.

Havertz levels score from the penalty spot

As the match approached its final minutes, Arsenal finally found an opportunity to equalize. Malik Tillman challenged Noni Madueke inside the penalty area, prompting the referee to consult the video assistant referee system. After reviewing the incident, the decision was made to award a penalty.

Kai Havertz, who had entered the game as a substitute, stepped forward to take the spot kick against his former club. In the 89th minute, he calmly converted the penalty to bring Arsenal level and dramatically alter the outlook of the tie.

Tie remains open before London showdown

The late goal ensured neither side carries a decisive advantage into the second leg. With the aggregate score level, the upcoming match in London is expected to determine which team progresses to the quarterfinals.

Leverkusen coach Kasper Hjulmand expressed mixed feelings after the match, acknowledging both the strong performance of his team and the frustration of conceding late.

He said his side had delivered a high-quality display against a strong opponent and allowed very few opportunities. However, the late penalty meant the match ended in a draw rather than a victory. Despite the disappointment, he added that Leverkusen would travel to London with confidence and belief that they can still progress.
