Weather – Unsettled Conditions Likely Across Jammu and Kashmir This Weekend

Weather –  Jammu and Kashmir is expected to witness a spell of unstable weather conditions over the next few days, with the Meteorological Department predicting fluctuating patterns from Friday through Sunday. According to officials, the most intense phase of this activity is likely around April 4, bringing a mix of rain, snowfall, and strong winds across several regions.

Jammu kashmir weather unsettled weekend

Rain and Snow to Affect Multiple Regions

The weather office has indicated that many parts of the Union Territory will experience light to moderate rainfall, while higher altitude areas may receive fresh snowfall. These conditions are expected to persist from April 3 to April 5, with widespread cloud cover dominating the skies.

On Friday, residents can expect mostly cloudy weather, with intermittent showers occurring in several areas. In elevated regions, snowfall is likely, accompanied by thunder and occasional hailstorms. Wind speeds may reach between 30 to 50 kmph at scattered locations, particularly during the afternoon hours.

Peak Activity Expected on April 4

Saturday is likely to bring the most significant weather activity during this period. The department has highlighted a strong possibility of moderate rainfall and snowfall affecting both the Kashmir Valley and parts of the Jammu division. This day is expected to mark the peak of the current wet spell, with conditions remaining active throughout.

Such weather patterns may impact daily routines, especially in hilly areas where snowfall can disrupt movement and reduce visibility. Authorities have advised residents to stay updated with local advisories and exercise caution when traveling.

Gradual Improvement from April 5

By Sunday, weather conditions are expected to show signs of improvement. Skies may turn partly cloudy, and rainfall activity is likely to reduce significantly. Only isolated areas may receive light showers, offering some relief after the intense conditions of the previous days.

However, the broader outlook suggests that the region may not remain completely stable for long. Another round of rain and snowfall is likely between April 7 and April 9, indicating continued variability in weather patterns.

Advisory for Travel and Agriculture

The Meteorological Department has issued warnings about possible landslides, mudslides, and falling rocks in vulnerable zones. These risks are particularly high along key routes such as the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, where changing weather conditions can quickly impact road safety.

Farmers and orchard owners have been specifically advised to pause activities such as spraying and fieldwork on April 3 and 4. Strong winds and rainfall could affect crops and reduce the effectiveness of such operations.

In addition, a noticeable drop in daytime temperatures is expected during this period, which may influence both agricultural conditions and general comfort levels.

Temperature Readings Across Key Locations

On Friday morning, Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of 11.2 degrees Celsius, while Gulmarg registered 4 degrees and Pahalgam reported 6.2 degrees. In the Jammu region, the minimum temperature in Jammu city stood at 19.8 degrees Celsius, with Katra at 19 degrees. Other areas such as Batote, Banihal, and Bhaderwah recorded temperatures of 13.5, 12.1, and 10 degrees respectively.

Seasonal Context and Water Availability

The recent weather developments come after a winter season marked by below-average snowfall and rainfall in Jammu and Kashmir. This had raised concerns about water availability for both drinking and irrigation purposes.

However, improved precipitation during February and March, including rainfall in plains and moderate snowfall in higher areas, has helped ease some of these worries. Water levels in rivers, streams, lakes, and underground sources have shown improvement, offering a more stable outlook for the coming months.
