Weather – Low-Pressure System May Bring Rain to Tamil Nadu Coast

Weather – The India Meteorological Department has reported the formation of a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, which is expected to strengthen in the coming days and may lead to rainfall across parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

The weather system took shape on Tuesday over the Bay of Bengal and currently spans parts of the adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal and the equatorial Indian Ocean. According to officials from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the system is tracking west-northwest and is likely to intensify further as it moves across warm sea waters.

Dry Spell Likely Before Weather Shift

Despite the developing system over the sea, most areas of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal are expected to experience dry conditions until Thursday. Meteorologists have indicated that there will be no immediate change in daytime temperatures or major rainfall activity during this period.

However, forecasters believe atmospheric conditions could begin to shift soon after Thursday as the system gathers strength. The impact is expected to be more noticeable in coastal and southern districts.

Moderate Rainfall Forecast for Coastal Districts

From Friday onward, moderate rainfall is likely in several coastal districts of Tamil Nadu as well as parts of southern interior regions. The IMD has also projected that on February 21, rainfall of moderate intensity could occur at multiple locations across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

The expected showers are linked to the influence of the strengthening low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal. While no extreme weather warnings have been issued at this stage, officials are closely monitoring the system’s development.

Advisory for Coastal Communities

Authorities have urged residents, especially those living along the coastline and in southern districts, to keep track of official weather bulletins. Fishermen have been advised to remain cautious and check updates before venturing into the sea, as sea conditions may change depending on the system’s intensity.

Local administrations are also reviewing preparedness measures in case rainfall activity increases over the weekend.

Light Mist Expected in Northern Districts

In northern parts of Tamil Nadu, early morning mist is likely on Wednesday and Thursday. The weather department noted that light mist conditions could briefly affect visibility during dawn hours. Motorists are advised to exercise caution while driving in the early morning, particularly on highways and rural roads where visibility may be reduced.

These misty conditions are expected to clear as the day progresses, with no major disruptions anticipated.

Chennai to See Stable Daytime Weather

In Chennai, partly cloudy skies are forecast over the next two days. The city may also experience light mist in isolated pockets during the early morning hours. Daytime weather is expected to remain largely stable, with no significant rainfall predicted in the immediate term.

Officials said that while the developing system may influence weather patterns later in the week, there is no indication of heavy rainfall for the city at present.

System Under Close Observation

The India Meteorological Department continues to monitor the movement and strengthening of the low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal. Further updates will be issued as the system evolves and clearer projections become available.

Residents across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are encouraged to follow official advisories to stay informed about potential changes in weather conditions over the coming days.
