Weather – Low Pressure System May Bring Rain to Tamil Nadu
Weather – The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai has indicated that a low-pressure system is likely to take shape over the Bay of Bengal by Monday, a development that could trigger rainfall across several parts of Tamil Nadu and neighbouring territories in the coming days.

Low-Pressure Area Likely Over Bay of Bengal
According to the India Meteorological Department, an upper-air cyclonic circulation is currently active over the equatorial region and the adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal. This atmospheric pattern is expected to pave the way for a low-pressure area to develop over the central south Bay of Bengal and nearby equatorial Indian Ocean waters by the start of the week.
Meteorologists say such systems typically influence weather conditions along the Tamil Nadu coast, particularly during transitional seasonal phases. While the system is still in its formative stage, officials are keeping a close watch on its movement and strength.
Rainfall Expected Across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal
The weather office has projected that the emerging system may affect rainfall activity in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal until February 21. Several districts are likely to receive light to moderate showers during this period.
At this stage, widespread heavy rainfall is not anticipated. However, weather experts have noted that changes in atmospheric conditions could alter the intensity of the system. Updates will be issued regularly as the situation evolves.
Cloudy Skies and Isolated Showers in Coastal Areas
Forecast models suggest that parts of coastal and northern Tamil Nadu may witness overcast skies accompanied by intermittent rain. Isolated locations across the state are expected to experience light to moderate precipitation over the next few days.
Residents in coastal districts should prepare for occasional spells of rain as the system consolidates over the Bay of Bengal. Although the projected rainfall may not be intense, localized showers could affect routine outdoor activities.
Mist Forecast for Chennai and Surrounding Districts
In addition to rainfall, moderate mist is expected in certain districts on Sunday morning. Areas likely to experience reduced visibility include Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Cuddalore and Puducherry.
Commuters travelling during the early hours have been advised to remain cautious, as misty conditions can temporarily affect road visibility. Traffic authorities may also monitor key stretches where fog formation is more frequent.
Advisory for Fishermen and Coastal Communities
Fishermen operating in the south Bay of Bengal and adjoining equatorial waters have been urged to stay updated with official weather bulletins. Sea conditions could change depending on how the low-pressure system develops in the coming days.
Although no major warning has been issued so far, authorities stress the importance of monitoring forecasts before venturing into deeper waters. Coastal communities are encouraged to rely only on updates from the Regional Meteorological Centre and the India Meteorological Department for accurate information.
Seasonal Pattern Brings Intermittent Showers
Weather systems forming over the Bay of Bengal during this time of year often bring scattered rainfall to Tamil Nadu. Such spells can provide temporary relief from dry weather in several districts, particularly in interior regions that have experienced limited precipitation in recent weeks.
Officials have reiterated that the situation is being closely observed. Any significant change in the system’s intensity or track will be communicated through subsequent advisories. Residents are advised to follow verified weather updates and plan activities accordingly.
