Weather – Intermittent Rains Set to Ease Heat Across Tamil Nadu

Weather –  The India Meteorological Department has indicated that several parts of Tamil Nadu are likely to witness intermittent rainfall over the next six days, offering some relief from the rising summer temperatures. The forecast suggests that changing atmospheric conditions, including a low-pressure trough along the coast, are beginning to impact the region’s weather.

Rainfall Expected in Phases Across Regions

According to officials, light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms is expected at isolated locations in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on March 18. These conditions are primarily linked to a developing weather system along the coastal belt, which is likely to influence rainfall activity, particularly in delta regions and nearby districts.

On March 19, rainfall activity is expected to reduce slightly, with only a few places in the delta districts and the Karaikal region likely to receive light showers along with thunderstorms. Most other areas in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are predicted to experience dry weather during this period.

Southern and Coastal Areas to See Continued Activity

Weather patterns on March 20 are expected to remain similar, with scattered light rain forecast for southern Tamil Nadu, delta districts, and Karaikal. Coastal areas in the southern part of the state may also receive brief spells of rainfall, although the majority of the state is likely to stay dry.

By March 23, isolated light rainfall is expected to occur along southern coastal districts, while dry conditions are anticipated across the rest of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The overall pattern indicates limited but consistent rainfall activity in select regions rather than widespread showers.

Recent Showers Bring Temporary Relief

Over the past few days, several districts have already experienced sudden spells of rain, providing noticeable relief from the heat. In Virudhunagar district, places such as Sivakasi, Thiruthangal, and Sattur recorded intense thunderstorm activity lasting over an hour. The rainfall significantly lowered local temperatures, improving conditions for residents.

Similarly, parts of the Nilgiris, including Ooty and surrounding areas, reported hailstorms. These unusual weather events drew attention from both residents and tourists, as hail is relatively rare in the region during this time of year.

Widespread Rainfall Across Multiple Districts

Rainfall was also observed in areas of Tirupattur district, including Kalasapakkam and Pudukovil, as well as in towns like Vaniyambadi and Ambur. The Yelagiri hills experienced consistent rainfall, contributing to cooler temperatures in the region.

In Kodaikanal, visitors were surprised by hailstones in Poolathur village. Following the showers, dense fog reduced visibility, creating challenges for motorists traveling through the hill station.

Madurai witnessed heavy rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning for more than an hour. The sudden downpour led to a sharp drop in temperature, offering much-needed relief from the prevailing heat.

Impact Seen in Western and Southern Districts

Coimbatore, which had been experiencing high temperatures, received widespread rainfall in several areas, including Race Course, Gandhipuram, and Ukkadam. Surrounding localities such as Perur, Madampatti, and Kaalampalayam also recorded showers.

In southern districts like Thoothukudi and Theni, rainfall was reported in regions including Kovilpatti, Ettayapuram, and Periyakulam. Areas near popular spots such as Sothuparai dam and Kumbakkarai Falls also experienced rain, contributing to improved weather conditions.

Unusual Weather Activity in Neighbouring State

Meanwhile, neighbouring Karnataka’s Dharwad district experienced sudden hailstorms, with roads briefly covered in ice-like deposits. This points to a broader pattern of unstable weather conditions affecting parts of southern India.

Overall, while the rainfall is not expected to be widespread, the intermittent showers over the coming days are likely to bring periodic relief from the heat and signal a temporary shift in seasonal weather patterns.
