VoterList – Questions Raised Over Discrepancies in Uttar Pradesh Electoral Roll
VoterList – The release of the updated electoral roll in Uttar Pradesh has triggered a political debate, with opposition leaders questioning inconsistencies and the process followed during its revision.

Concerns Over Differences in Voter Records
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Member of Parliament Sanjay Singh has expressed serious concerns about significant differences between earlier voter lists and the recently revised electoral roll in Uttar Pradesh. Speaking on the issue, he pointed out that both the Panchayat and Assembly election voter lists were prepared by the same set of state officials.
He questioned how such large-scale inconsistencies could arise despite being handled by the same administrative machinery. According to Singh, this raises doubts about whether certain sections of voters, particularly those aligned with opposition parties, may have been unfairly affected during the revision process.
Updated Electoral Roll Shows Sharp Increase
The final electoral roll, published on April 10, reflects a total of 133,984,792 registered voters in the state. This includes 73,071,061 male voters and 60,909,525 female voters. The revised figures indicate an addition of over 8.4 million voters compared to the earlier draft released on January 6, which listed 125,556,025 names.
While the increase suggests a broader voter base, it has also intensified scrutiny over the accuracy and reliability of the data, especially given the discrepancies flagged during the revision exercise.
Large Number of Data Irregularities Reported
Officials involved in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process have identified a substantial number of inconsistencies in the data. Reports indicate the presence of approximately 2.22 crore logical errors, along with 1.04 crore cases where voter details did not match properly.
These figures have raised concerns among political parties and observers, particularly as Uttar Pradesh is expected to hold its next Assembly elections in the coming year. Ensuring an accurate voter list is considered critical for maintaining the integrity of the electoral process.
Extension Granted for Public Feedback
Earlier in February, the Election Commission of India extended the deadline for submitting claims and objections related to the voter list revision until March 3. This decision followed a request from the state’s Chief Electoral Officer, who sought additional time to allow citizens to verify their details and report discrepancies.
The extension was aimed at encouraging greater public participation and improving the accuracy of the electoral roll. Authorities had urged voters to check their names and ensure that their information was correctly recorded.
Opposition Leaders Voice Strong Criticism
The revision exercise has also drawn criticism from other opposition leaders. Samajwadi Party MP Akhilesh Yadav alleged that the process could be misused to influence voter data. He referred to the deletion of nearly 2.89 crore names from the draft rolls and urged citizens to remain vigilant.
Yadav called on voters across the state to verify their registration status to avoid any last-minute issues during elections. His remarks reflect broader concerns among opposition parties about transparency and fairness in the voter list revision process.
Importance of Accurate Electoral Rolls
As Uttar Pradesh prepares for its upcoming Assembly elections, the accuracy of the voter list remains a key issue. Electoral rolls serve as the foundation of the democratic process, and any discrepancies can lead to disputes and undermine public trust.
Authorities are expected to continue reviewing the data and addressing objections to ensure that all eligible voters are included while removing any inaccuracies. The coming months will be crucial in determining how these concerns are resolved ahead of the elections.
