Violence – A wave of grief and anger has swept across Manipur following a deadly attack in Bishnupur district that claimed the lives of two young children and left their mother injured. The incident has triggered widespread protests, with civil society groups demanding accountability and swift justice for the victims.
Candlelight Protest Reflects Public Anger
In response to the tragedy, the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), an umbrella body of Meitei civil society organisations, organised a candlelight march at a relief camp in Imphal West. Participants gathered in large numbers to express solidarity with the affected family and to condemn the violence.
Protesters carried placards criticising both state and central leadership, holding them responsible for the deteriorating security situation. Demonstrators also alleged the involvement of armed groups in the attack, further intensifying tensions in the region.
Details of the Attack Emerge
According to reports, the attack occurred in the early hours of April 7 in Tronglaobi Awang Leikai, located in the Moirang area. Suspected militants reportedly threw an explosive device at a residential house around 1:00 AM.
At the time of the blast, two siblings—a five-year-old boy and his infant sister—were asleep inside the house. Both children lost their lives instantly, while their mother sustained injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Protests Spread Across Imphal
The incident has led to protests beyond the immediate area. The All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation (AMUCO) also organised a rally in Imphal, demanding justice and stronger security measures.
As the protest march progressed through key areas, security personnel were deployed in large numbers to prevent escalation. Demonstrators were stopped at one point, although authorities later allowed a small group to meet the Chief Minister and submit a memorandum outlining their demands.
Government Response and Assurances
Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh condemned the attack, describing it as a grave and inhumane act. He assured the public that those responsible would be identified and punished according to the law.
The Chief Minister also visited the injured woman in hospital, instructing officials to ensure she receives the best possible medical care. He emphasised that such acts of violence threaten the fragile peace in the state and must be dealt with firmly.
Political Reactions Raise Broader Questions
The incident has drawn reactions from national leaders as well. Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi criticised the central government, questioning its handling of the prolonged unrest in Manipur.
He expressed concern over the continuing violence, stating that even after years of conflict, there appears to be no clear path to peace. His remarks highlighted the growing political debate surrounding the situation in the state.
Investigation and Security Measures Intensified
Amid rising tensions, authorities have transferred the case to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for a detailed probe. Security forces have also stepped up operations across affected areas, deploying personnel from multiple agencies, including the police, Assam Rifles, and CRPF.
Combing operations are underway, supported by aerial monitoring, as officials attempt to track down those involved in the attack.
Restrictions Imposed to Maintain Order
The incident has led to disruptions in several parts of the state. Protesters blocked key roads, including the Imphal-Tidim route, and there were reports of vehicles being set on fire in some areas.
To prevent the spread of misinformation and maintain law and order, authorities imposed a temporary suspension of internet services in several districts, including Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching, and Bishnupur.
