Violence – The Indian government informed Parliament that thousands of incidents of violence targeting Hindus and other minority communities have been reported in Bangladesh over the past year and a half. According to data cited from human rights organisations, nearly 3,100 such incidents occurred between August 2024 and February 2026. The information was shared in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha by Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita.
Government response presented in Parliament
Responding to a question raised in the Upper House on Thursday, the minister said the figures were compiled based on reports collected by various human rights groups monitoring the situation in Bangladesh. These incidents reportedly included attacks on minority communities, their homes, businesses, religious institutions and other properties.
Margherita stated that the Government of India has been carefully tracking these developments and remains attentive to the safety concerns of minority communities in the neighbouring country. The issue has been reviewed regularly through diplomatic and official channels.
India raises issue with Bangladesh authorities
The minister informed Parliament that India has repeatedly raised concerns about the safety of minority groups with the authorities in Bangladesh. These discussions have taken place during multiple diplomatic engagements, including meetings held at senior government levels.
According to the ministry, India expects the Bangladeshi government to conduct proper investigations into the reported incidents. The Indian side has emphasised that those responsible for acts such as violence, killings or destruction of property must be identified and brought to justice through legal processes.
Officials also indicated that the matter has been discussed with international partners and foreign interlocutors during diplomatic interactions, reflecting the broader concern over the protection of minority communities in the region.
Responsibility lies with Bangladesh government
While outlining India’s position, the minister noted that the responsibility for ensuring the safety and rights of all citizens within Bangladesh rests primarily with the Bangladeshi government itself. This includes safeguarding the lives, freedoms and property of minority groups residing in the country.
The statement highlighted that every nation has a duty to ensure equal protection under the law for all communities, regardless of religion or ethnicity. India, he said, continues to encourage measures that strengthen security and justice for vulnerable populations.
Support systems for Indian nationals in Bangladesh
In addition to monitoring the broader situation, the Indian government has also focused on the welfare of Indian citizens living or working in Bangladesh. The Indian diplomatic mission and consular posts in the country remain actively involved in assisting nationals who may require help.
The mission operates a round-the-clock emergency helpline to respond quickly to requests from Indian citizens facing difficulties. Authorities said the helpline allows individuals to seek assistance at any time, ensuring timely support during emergencies.
Consular services and community outreach
The Indian High Commission in Dhaka has also appointed a dedicated consular officer to address complaints, requests and concerns raised by Indian nationals. This officer works closely with the community to ensure that any issues related to safety, documentation or legal assistance are handled promptly.
Officials said the mission maintains regular communication with members of the Indian community living in Bangladesh. Meetings and interactions are organised periodically to understand their concerns and provide guidance on available services.
In addition, the High Commission conducts “Open House” sessions for Indian citizens. These forums allow community members to directly share their concerns with embassy officials and receive updates on consular support, travel advisories and safety measures.
Government representatives said these initiatives are aimed at maintaining close contact with the Indian community while ensuring they have access to timely help whenever needed.
