Vandalism – Nehru Statue Damaged in Assam’s Cachar District
Vandalism – A statue of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, was damaged in Assam’s Cachar district earlier this week, prompting a police investigation and political reactions ahead of the state assembly elections.

Incident Reported at Pailapool Market
According to officials, the incident occurred late Monday night in the Pailapool market area under the Lakhipur police station limits. By Tuesday morning, residents discovered that the statue had been uprooted and severely damaged.
Police said the structure appeared to have been brought down using heavy machinery. CCTV footage from nearby establishments showed unidentified individuals using an excavator to demolish the statue during the night. However, authorities confirmed that no eyewitnesses have come forward so far.
Sankar Dayal, officer-in-charge of Lakhipur police station, stated that a case has been formally registered. “We have reviewed CCTV footage which shows a few individuals using an excavator to bring down the statue. While one person has been detained for questioning and the excavator has been seized, the driver of the machine is still being traced,” he said.
Investigation Underway
Law enforcement officials have begun examining footage and gathering technical evidence to identify those involved. The detained individual is being questioned to determine the motive behind the act and whether others were part of the operation.
Police have not yet confirmed whether the vandalism was politically motivated or the result of a personal dispute. Authorities said the investigation is ongoing and further details will be shared once facts are verified.
Security has been tightened in the area to prevent any escalation, and local residents have been urged to maintain calm.
Political Reactions Surface
The vandalism has drawn sharp reactions from political leaders. The district president of the Congress party in Silchar, Sajal Acherjee, described the incident as deliberate and alleged that it was intended to disturb public harmony ahead of elections.
He claimed that the timing of the incident raised concerns, particularly as Assam prepares for its upcoming assembly polls. However, no official confirmation has been provided by investigators regarding any political angle.
The state is expected to hold elections for its 126-member legislative assembly in March and April. Political activities have already intensified across several districts as parties prepare their campaigns.
Historical Significance of the Statue
Jawaharlal Nehru, who served as India’s first Prime Minister after independence, remains a prominent figure in the country’s political history. Statues and memorials dedicated to him are present in many parts of India as tributes to his role in shaping the nation’s democratic framework and development policies.
Incidents involving public statues often attract attention due to their symbolic value. Such acts can sometimes lead to heightened political debate, especially during election seasons.
Appeal for Calm
Local authorities have appealed to citizens not to spread unverified information. Officials emphasized that strict action will be taken against those found responsible once the investigation is complete.
Community leaders in the area have also called for restraint and cooperation with law enforcement agencies. So far, there have been no reports of violence or protests linked directly to the incident.
As the inquiry continues, officials are focusing on identifying all individuals involved and determining whether the act was pre-planned. Further updates are expected once the investigation progresses.
