Vandalism – Nehru Bust Damaged in Assam’s Cachar District

Vandalism – The alleged destruction of a Jawaharlal Nehru bust in Assam’s Cachar district has triggered sharp political reactions and demands for accountability from the state’s opposition leaders.

Nehru bust vandalism assam cachar

The President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, Gaurav Gogoi, has condemned the reported vandalism of a bust of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, at Poilapool in the Lakhipur constituency. The incident, which allegedly involved the use of an excavator machine, took place in the Cachar district and has drawn strong responses from the Congress party.

Congress Leadership Calls Incident an Attack on Legacy

In a statement released on Wednesday, Gogoi described the act as more than mere damage to a public installation. He said the incident amounted to disrespect toward a leader who played a central role in India’s freedom struggle and later in shaping the foundations of modern India.

According to Gogoi, while political disagreements are part of a healthy democracy, attempts to undermine historical figures through vandalism cross a serious line. He emphasized that ideological differences should not translate into acts that target symbols associated with the country’s democratic journey.

Questions Raised Over Government Response

The APCC president also expressed concern over what he described as a lack of official response. He pointed out that the incident occurred during the tenure of the Bharatiya Janata Party government in Assam and questioned why there had been no immediate public clarification.

Gogoi underlined that Assam and India derive their strength from pluralism and democratic traditions. Safeguarding those principles, he said, should remain a priority regardless of political alignment. He urged authorities to swiftly identify those responsible and ensure that appropriate legal action is taken.

Assam Congress Seeks Accountability

The Assam Congress unit echoed Gogoi’s criticism, terming the vandalism both cowardly and unacceptable. In a public statement shared on social media, the party sought clarity on the ownership of the excavator allegedly used to bring down the bust. It also asked under whose instructions the act was carried out.

The party further noted that Lakhipur is represented in the state assembly by an MLA considered close to the Chief Minister, and it called for a transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. The Congress demanded strict and exemplary action against those found guilty.

Incident Details and Local Impact

The bust of Jawaharlal Nehru had reportedly stood at Pailapool for several years before being damaged late on the night of February 23. Local reports indicate that unidentified individuals used a heavy machine to topple or damage the structure. As of now, officials have not publicly confirmed the identities of those involved.

The incident has stirred discussion in the Lakhipur constituency and surrounding areas, where the statue had been regarded as a reminder of India’s early post-independence leadership. Political observers say such episodes often deepen existing tensions between rival parties, particularly in regions where local political dynamics are already sensitive.

Call for Investigation

Gogoi has appealed to law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough probe and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. He maintained that the people of Assam would not support acts of vandalism targeting historical figures, regardless of present-day political differences.

Authorities have yet to release detailed findings, and it remains to be seen what steps will follow. For now, the episode has added to the ongoing political debate in Assam, with opposition leaders pressing for accountability and the preservation of public monuments linked to India’s national history.
