TransgenderRights – Ramgarh Builds Separate Public Toilets for Transgender Community

TransgenderRights –  In a landmark step aimed at promoting dignity and equal access, the Ramgarh district administration in Jharkhand has established separate public toilets exclusively for members of the transgender community. The move marks the first such initiative in the state and is being seen as a significant effort to address everyday discrimination faced by transgender individuals in public spaces.

Dedicated Facilities Launched at Key Public Spots

The newly constructed restrooms have been set up at three major locations in Ramgarh — the District Collector’s Office Park, Sadar Hospital, and the main bus stand. These locations were selected to ensure that the facilities are accessible in high-footfall public areas.

According to district officials, users will be required to pay Rs 5 for toilet access, while bathing facilities will be available at Rs 10. The administration has maintained that the charges are aligned with standard public utility fees and are meant to support maintenance and cleanliness.

Ramgarh Deputy Commissioner Faiz Ak Ahmed Mumtaz stated that the district administration is committed to safeguarding the rights and dignity of transgender persons. He emphasized that the broader objective is to create an inclusive environment where members of the community can live with respect, receive equal opportunities, and achieve financial independence. The initiative is also part of ongoing efforts to strengthen social security measures for marginalized groups.

State Forms Panel to Tackle Land Grabbing

In a separate development, the Jharkhand government has intensified its efforts to curb land grabbing cases across the state. A state-level committee has been constituted under the leadership of Additional Chief Secretary Mast Ram Meena to examine the issue comprehensively.

Government sources indicated that the panel will study legal frameworks and administrative measures adopted by other states to prevent illegal occupation of land. Based on its findings, the committee will recommend necessary amendments or additional provisions that could help strengthen Jharkhand’s legal response to land-related disputes.

Officials added that if existing regulations are found inadequate, the committee may propose the introduction of new legislation to address loopholes exploited by land mafias. The group will also review the Standard Operating Procedure drafted earlier by a departmental committee and assess its effectiveness before submitting a final report to the state government.

Migrant Worker’s Family Seeks Compensation

Meanwhile, a tragic case involving a migrant worker from Jharkhand has taken a sensitive turn. The family of 27-year-old Vijay Kumar Mahto has declined to accept his mortal remains, demanding financial compensation from the private company where he had been employed in Saudi Arabia.

Mahto, a resident of Dudhapania village under Dumri block in Giridih district, was reportedly killed on October 15 last year after being struck by a bullet during a crossfire between police and criminals in Saudi Arabia. Officials familiar with the matter said the incident is currently under judicial consideration in Jeddah because it involved a firearm injury.

Authorities noted that the compensation process may depend on the outcome of court proceedings in Saudi Arabia. Until then, uncertainty surrounds the timeline for any financial settlement.

In a poignant detail, family members revealed that shortly after being hit by the bullet, Mahto had managed to send a voice message to his wife, informing her that he had been accidentally injured in the firing. The message has since become a painful reminder of the incident for his relatives.

Officials continue to remain in contact with the family while diplomatic and legal processes move forward. The case has also renewed discussions about the challenges faced by migrant workers employed abroad and the mechanisms available to support their families in times of crisis.
