TN BJP: The calls on the NHRC to investigate the vicious assault on an Odisha youngster on its own initiative
TN BJP: The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Tamil Nadu unit has called on the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to take suo motu cognisance of the violent attack on a 20-year-old Odisha youth in Tiruttani, calling it a grave human rights violation and a troubling indication of the state’s increasing lawlessness.

On December 27, four minors, all around the age of 17, are accused of attacking K. Suraj, a resident of Kalahandi district in Odisha, close to the Tiruttani railway station.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Suraj was on a suburban train in Chennai after arriving after a family argument when the attackers reportedly threatened him and ejected him.
After that, he was led to a deserted location close to the former railway quarters, where he was viciously attacked with sickles as the assailants allegedly recorded the incident on their cell phones.
After suffering serious injuries to his hands, head, and face, Suraj was first hospitalized to the Tiruttani Government Hospital before being transferred to the Tiruvallur Government Medical College Hospital for further care.
The four young people were eventually apprehended by police in the vicinity of the Gangai Amman shrine, and the weapons used in the assault were found.
Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (attempt to kill) has been used to file a case. One of the defendants was returned to parental care, while the other three were placed in a juvenile home.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the event was the result of a personal argument rather than any language or regional hostility, according to North Zone Inspector General of Police Asra Garg.
Additionally, he stressed that the victim’s death rumors were untrue and said that investigations were underway to determine if the accused were under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the incident.
TN BJP spokesman A.N.S. Prasad requested the Commission to step in, stating grave concerns about the way the issue was being handled, in a comprehensive letter to the NHRC.
The lawsuit draws attention to claimed failures to provide the victim with prompt psychological care, concerns about the sufficiency of forensic and medical processes, and the larger problem of increased youth violence fueled by drug misuse and social media glorification.
The BJP has urged the NHRC to conduct an impartial and thorough investigation, guarantee the victim receives fair compensation and rehabilitation, and suggest structural changes to avert such occurrences in the future.
The party also emphasized how such instances jeopardize migrant workers’ safety and the fundamental guarantee of equality, dignity, and protection for all people.
