Tennessee: More than 1,400 prisoners will take a basic test in January as part of special literacy campaign
Tennessee: With 1,455 prisoners getting ready to take a basic literacy test as part of the state government’s unique initiative, a significant effort to increase literacy within Tamil Nadu’s jails is scheduled to conclude in January 2026.

The program, which has been allocated Rs 30 lakh, aims to provide offenders in both district and central jails around the state with fundamental education and academic assistance. The applicants’ training sessions started in August and are already nearing the end.
The curriculum, which is structured as a six-month module, teaches prisoners how to read and write and acquaints them with fundamental study materials. The offenders will go through an official evaluation after the program, which is anticipated to end by the third week of January.
The test is a component of a larger literacy campaign run by the New India Literacy Programme (NILP), which just finished its last round of evaluations for non-prison groups.
The state’s goal to guarantee that educational reforms reach even the most marginalized segments of society is further shown by the program’s inclusion of jailed inmates.
The approach used to alleviate the teacher shortage on prison campuses is one of the initiative’s distinctive features. Inmates with sufficient reading and teaching abilities are assigned to assist other applicants with their educational requirements when necessary. Over the course of six months, these inmate-teachers are paid Rs 635 per student, guaranteeing program continuity and peer-based support.
The Puzhal prison complex is expected to submit the most applicants for the test, according to data from the Directorate of Non-Formal and Adult Education. Up to 323 prisoners have enlisted from this institution, 45 of them are female. Salem Central Prison comes in second with 285 people. Notable enrollment numbers are also being reported by other jails. There are 25 female applicants from the women’s jail and 121 male detainees enrolled at Tiruchy Central jail. A total of 120 individuals have been recruited by Tirunelveli Central Prison. Vellore Central Prison has 72 male and 19 female applicants scheduled to sit the test, while Madurai Central Prison will present 69 male and 39 female convicts.
The particular literacy program is seen by officials as a significant step toward rehabilitation and reintegration.
In addition to marking a significant milestone for the participants, the January test will also set a standard for the state’s continued efforts to increase literacy among marginalized populations housed in correctional institutions.
