The move reflects a broader effort to strengthen energy independence while gradually reducing the carbon footprint of one of the country’s most resource-intensive sectors.

The company’s latest initiative highlights a transition away from imported fuels that have long powered steel manufacturing. By utilising locally available coal, Jindal Steel aims to secure a more stable energy supply chain and reduce exposure to global price fluctuations.

Officials indicated that the company has established a coal gasification-based Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) facility, a first of its kind in India. Instead of relying on conventional fossil fuels, the plant operates using synthesis gas, commonly known as syngas, produced from coal. This method represents a significant technological step in modernising traditional steel production practices.

Expansion into Finishing Processes

Building on the success of its DRI operations, Jindal Steel has extended the use of syngas into other areas of its production chain. The company has introduced this fuel in furnaces used for galvanising and colour coating, marking what it describes as a global first within the steel industry.

This development comes at a time when industries worldwide are facing supply constraints for fuels such as natural gas, LPG, and propane. By adopting syngas, the company has been able to maintain operational continuity without relying heavily on these limited resources.

Innovation in Blast Furnace Technology

Another key advancement involves the injection of syngas into blast furnaces, a process that traditionally depends on carbon-intensive inputs. This adaptation not only reduces reliance on imported materials but also contributes to lowering emissions generated during steel production.

Jindal Steel’s integrated approach, often referred to as the “mine-to-metal” model, has supported this transition. With substantial investments exceeding USD 12 billion across facilities in Angul, Raigarh, and Patratu, the company has built a vertically integrated system that allows better control over resources and production processes.

This model enables the company to streamline operations, reduce costs, and implement technological upgrades more effectively. It also positions Jindal Steel as a key participant in India’s efforts to develop sustainable industrial infrastructure.
