The individual has been identified as Ningthoujam Ibungocha, also known as Sathouba Meitei, aged 38. He is a resident of Nongdam Makha Leikai in the Pukhri Achouba Mapal area of Imphal East. Officials said he was apprehended from Yaingangpokpi Bazar, which falls under the jurisdiction of Yaingangpokpi Police Station.
During the arrest, security personnel recovered a mobile phone along with a SIM card from his possession. Authorities believe the device may assist in further investigation related to alleged extortion activities in the region.
In a brief update shared on social media, Manipur Police stated that the accused was involved in extortion and was operating as a self-styled Lieutenant of the banned outfit. Further legal procedures are currently underway.
Alleged Link to Extortion Activities
Police officials indicated that the arrest was part of ongoing efforts to curb unlawful activities attributed to insurgent groups active in parts of Manipur. The People’s Liberation Army, a proscribed militant organization, has been under scrutiny for alleged involvement in extortion and other criminal operations targeting civilians and businesses.
Authorities did not disclose specific details regarding the scope of the suspect’s alleged activities. However, sources confirmed that investigations are continuing to determine whether others were involved or if additional networks were operating in coordination with the accused.
Security operations have been intensified in vulnerable areas as part of broader measures to maintain law and order.
Arms and Ammunition Recovered in Separate Operation
In a related development on February 17, security forces carried out another operation in Imphal West district, leading to the recovery of a substantial quantity of arms and ammunition. The search was conducted along Ngairangbam Tanoukhul Road towards Longa Koireng under Patsoi Police Station limits.
According to officials, the recovered items included a double-barrel gun and a country-made pistol fitted with a magazine. Additionally, 181 rounds of ammunition of different calibres were seized during the operation.
Security personnel also confiscated three magazines, two No. 36 hand grenades, one detonator, and a Baofeng wireless handset along with its charger. The recovery was made from an open area, though authorities did not confirm whether any arrests were made in connection with the seized weapons.
Continued Vigilance Across Districts
Law enforcement agencies have maintained heightened surveillance across both Imphal East and Imphal West districts in recent weeks. Officials said coordinated search operations are being conducted to prevent the movement of illegal arms and to disrupt suspected militant networks.
The recovery of explosives and communication equipment has raised concerns about potential attempts to destabilize the region. However, authorities have assured residents that proactive measures are being taken to safeguard public safety.
Manipur Police reiterated their commitment to maintaining peace and urged citizens to report any suspicious activities. Investigations into both the arrest and the arms recovery are ongoing, with further updates expected as inquiries progress.
