Security – Five Maoists Surrender in Dantewada, Weapons Recovered

Security – Five members of a Maoist group, including four women, surrendered before security forces in Chhattisgarh’s Dantewada district on Tuesday, marking another development in ongoing efforts to curb insurgency in the Bastar region. The individuals were linked to the Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee and chose to lay down arms at a formal event held at the Police Lines in Karli.

Surrender under rehabilitation initiative

The surrender took place as part of the “Puna Margem” initiative, a program focused on rehabilitating former extremists and integrating them back into society. Officials present at the event stated that the individuals expressed disillusionment with the Maoist movement, citing its weakening structure and lack of purpose as key reasons for their decision.

Authorities reiterated that the initiative offers a structured path for those leaving insurgent activities, including support for livelihood, safety, and reintegration. The program has been a central part of the broader strategy to restore stability in the region.

Details of surrendered cadres

Among those who surrendered was 42-year-old Some Kadti, identified as a member of the Bhairamgarh Area Committee in Bijapur district. She carried a reward of five lakh rupees. The other four individuals—Lakhma Oyam (19), Sarita Podiyam (21), Jogi Kalmu (20), and Moti Oyam (19)—were also associated with Maoist ranks in Bijapur.

Together, the group had a combined bounty of nine lakh rupees announced by security agencies, reflecting their involvement in insurgent activities.

Intelligence leads to major weapons recovery

Following the surrender, security forces acted on information provided by the former cadres and recovered a significant cache of arms from hidden Maoist storage sites. The recovered weapons included eight SLR rifles, three INSAS rifles, a carbine, a .303 rifle, and five barrel grenade launchers.

Officials described the seizure as a major operational success, noting that it would weaken the group’s operational capacity in the region. The recovery is expected to disrupt planned activities and reduce the threat level in affected areas.

Continued progress in anti-Maoist operations

Dantewada has emerged as a focal point in anti-Maoist efforts, with steady progress reported over the past year. Since early 2024, a total of 607 Maoists have surrendered in the district under rehabilitation programs. In addition, 92 individuals have been arrested, while 54 were killed during encounters with security forces.

Joint operations conducted with neighboring districts such as Bijapur, Narayanpur, and Sukma have also contributed to the neutralization of several senior Maoist leaders. These coordinated efforts have significantly impacted the insurgent network across the Bastar division.

Officials highlight rehabilitation and long-term goals

Senior officials from the police, Central Reserve Police Force, and district administration attended the surrender event. They emphasized that the focus remains not only on enforcement but also on creating opportunities for those willing to abandon violence.

According to officials, the rehabilitation policy ensures that surrendered individuals receive support to rebuild their lives with dignity. This includes access to financial aid, skill development programs, and protection measures.

Authorities also underlined that such initiatives are essential for establishing long-term peace and fostering development in areas previously affected by insurgency.

Declining influence of Maoist movement

With a growing number of surrenders and consistent recovery of arms, officials believe the Maoist movement in the Bastar region is steadily losing ground. The combined approach of security operations and rehabilitation programs has contributed to weakening the organizational structure of insurgent groups.

Government efforts continue to focus on strengthening trust within local communities while ensuring that those leaving extremist paths are supported in their transition to mainstream society.
