RoadSafety – Drunk Driving Check Turns Violent, Constable Injured in Delhi
RoadSafety – A Delhi Traffic Police constable sustained injuries after a car driver allegedly attempted to evade a routine drunken driving check and struck the officer in the Janakpuri area, officials confirmed on Sunday. The accused, identified as Nilesh Kumar from Dwarka’s Bagdola locality, has been taken into custody, and the vehicle involved has been seized for further investigation.

Routine Check Escalates Into Dangerous Encounter
According to police officials, the incident occurred on Saturday evening near Bharti College on Lal Sai Marg, where a traffic team had set up a regular checkpoint to monitor compliance with road safety norms. Such checks are commonly carried out to identify drivers operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol and to ensure adherence to traffic regulations.
During the operation, officers signaled a car to stop after noticing suspicious behavior. Instead of complying, the driver allegedly attempted to speed away from the checkpoint, creating a hazardous situation for both officers and nearby commuters.
Constable Hit While Trying to Intervene
As the driver tried to flee, the vehicle struck a traffic constable who was positioned ahead. Senior police officials reported that the impact was severe, with the officer being hit directly and landing on the bonnet of the car. The vehicle continued moving for a short distance before the constable was thrown onto the road.
The injured officer was immediately attended to and taken for medical evaluation. While the extent of injuries has not been officially detailed, authorities indicated that he is receiving appropriate care.
Accused Apprehended and Vehicle Seized
Following the incident, the police team acted swiftly to stop the vehicle and apprehend the driver. Nilesh Kumar was taken into custody at the scene, and the car involved in the incident has been seized as part of the ongoing investigation.
Officials stated that legal proceedings have been initiated, and relevant charges are expected to be filed based on the findings of the case. The police are also examining whether the driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.
Ongoing Concerns Over Drunk Driving Violations
The case has once again drawn attention to the dangers associated with drunk driving and the risks faced by enforcement personnel during roadside checks. Authorities regularly conduct such operations to reduce accidents and improve overall road safety, particularly during weekends and late evening hours when violations tend to rise.
Despite repeated awareness campaigns and strict penalties, instances of drivers attempting to evade checks continue to be reported. Officials emphasized that non-compliance not only endangers the driver but also puts the lives of police personnel and other road users at risk.
Police Emphasize Need for Public Cooperation
Law enforcement agencies have urged motorists to cooperate with traffic officials and follow legal instructions during such checks. They reiterated that routine inspections are conducted in the interest of public safety and are essential to preventing serious road accidents.
The police also highlighted that fleeing from a checkpoint or endangering officers on duty can lead to serious legal consequences. Citizens are encouraged to report reckless driving and adhere to traffic rules to ensure safer roads for everyone.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and further details are expected as authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the case.
