Rahul Gandhi: and Congress leaders honor the 1971 war martyrs on Vijay Diwas
Rahul Gandhi: On the occasion of Vijay Diwas on Tuesday, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, paid respects to the individuals who created history and showed unwavering bravery during the 1971 war.

India celebrates Vijay Diwas on December 16 each year to commemorate the country’s resounding victory over Pakistan in the 1971 war, which led to the liberation of East Pakistan and the creation of Bangladesh.
In addition, the anniversary commemorates the greatest military surrender since World War II, when 93,000 Pakistani troops turned themselves in to the Indian Armed Forces and the Mukti Bahini in Dhaka. It pays tribute to the valor and sacrifice of Indian troops who battled for the independence and pride of their country.
“On this Vijay Diwas, I pay my respects to the brave heroes of our armed forces who, while defending India’s borders in the 1971 war, made history in the world with their valour, dedication, and unwavering resolve,” Rahul Gandhi said in a post on X. Every Indian will always be inspired by their unwavering bravery, hardship, and ultimate sacrifice.
Under the direction of then-prime minister Indira Gandhi, the 1971 triumph became a “great example of humanity and justice,” according to Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge.
“On this very day in the year 1971, history was made when the valiant armed forces of India decisively defeated Pakistan, securing independence for Bangladesh and reshaping the map of the world,” he wrote on X.
“This triumph became a wonderful example of justice and humanity under the imaginative, brave, and unwavering leadership of Smt. Indira Gandhi ji. We offer our hundredfold salutations to the Mukti Bahini and the Indian military’s unmatched bravery, valor, and sacrifice. A grateful country will always remember the sacrifice and commitment of these brave sons of Mother India,” he said.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, a Congress MP, also used X to honor the warriors who gave their lives while doing their duties in the 1971 war, ensuring India’s triumph over Pakistan.
“Our courageous troops made the country proud on this very day by setting an example of bravery and valor. Our army successfully responded to the conflict that was foisted upon us in 1971 by compelling the Pakistani army to surrender,” she remarked.
“This historic victory not only strengthened India’s integrity but also established Indian power on the global stage,” Priyanka added, praising the leadership of her grandmother, Indira Gandhi, who was the prime minister at the time. Today is a day to honor our army’s bravery and military prowess as well as Smt. Indira Gandhi Ji’s capable and fearless leadership. Greetings to all the courageous warriors and the martyrs who gave their lives to ensure India’s triumph.”
