Politics – Somanna Accuses Karnataka Government of Misuse of Power

Politics – Union Minister of State for Railways and Jal Shakti, V. Somanna, has levelled serious allegations against Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, accusing him of prioritising personal interests over public service during his tenure. Addressing reporters in Bagalkot while campaigning for BJP candidate Veeranna Charantimath, Somanna said the state administration has failed to meet expectations on several fronts, leaving citizens disappointed.

Concerns Over Farmers and Rural Distress

Highlighting the plight of farmers, the Union Minister stated that although minimum support prices were announced for various crops, the government’s response has been inadequate. He claimed that this lack of effective action has contributed to significant distress among the farming community, citing data that suggests thousands of farmers have died over the past three years.

Somanna also pointed to a growing employment crisis, noting that more than 2.5 lakh government positions remain unfilled. According to him, this reflects administrative inefficiency and a lack of urgency in addressing unemployment.

Flood Relief and Water Issues Raised

The Minister further criticised the state government for its handling of natural disasters, particularly in North Karnataka. He alleged that financial assistance for flood-affected families has not been released, leaving many struggling to rebuild their lives. At the same time, he warned of an emerging drinking water shortage in several regions, raising concerns about basic infrastructure and planning.

Claims of Development and Governance Failures

Speaking about Bengaluru, Somanna asserted that the central government has played a key role in the city’s development. He argued that both opposition and ruling party legislators are unable to confidently face their constituents due to a perceived lack of tangible achievements.

He described the current administration as one plagued by corruption and favouritism, claiming that governance standards have deteriorated. According to him, even internal criticism from ruling party members has not led to corrective action, indicating a disconnect within the government.

Allegations of Corruption and Mismanagement

Somanna accused the state leadership of allowing corruption to become widespread, alleging that public funds are being misused and that accountability mechanisms are weak. He claimed that several development projects have stalled due to poor management, further affecting public services and infrastructure.

He also raised concerns about irregularities in welfare schemes. Referring to employment programs, he alleged that millions of fake job cards exist, enabling misuse of funds under various pretexts, including machinery-related works.

Jal Jeevan Mission and Fund Utilisation

On the issue of water supply initiatives, the Minister said that under the Jal Jeevan Mission, a substantial amount of funds had been allocated to the state. However, he alleged that only a portion of these funds has been utilised, with the rest remaining unclaimed due to procedural delays or inefficiencies.

He stressed that proper utilisation certificates are essential for accessing further funds and suggested that the state government’s failure in this regard has slowed progress on critical water projects.

Political Implications Ahead of Bypolls

Looking ahead to upcoming by-elections, Somanna said these polls offer an opportunity for voters to evaluate the government’s performance. He urged people to consider issues such as governance, transparency, and development while casting their votes.

He also accused the administration of creating divisions among communities for political gain, alleging that such strategies undermine social harmony and distract from governance failures.

Central Government’s Development Vision

Concluding his remarks, Somanna highlighted increased budget allocations by the central government aimed at boosting national development and improving rural livelihoods. He said these efforts reflect a broader vision for economic growth and infrastructure expansion across the country.

However, he maintained that the benefits of these initiatives can only be realised if state governments actively participate and implement programs effectively.
