Politics – Row Erupts After Hemant Soren’s Remarks on Religious Practices
Politics – A fresh political controversy has surfaced in Jharkhand after Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s remarks in the state Assembly triggered sharp reactions from the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The issue has quickly escalated into a broader debate over religion, governance, and public priorities.

Remarks in Assembly Spark Debate
The controversy began during the concluding day of the Budget Session in the Jharkhand Assembly on Wednesday. While addressing the House, Soren raised questions about the country’s progress despite the widespread observance of religious rituals.
He pointed out that festivals such as Saraswati Puja and Lakshmi Puja are celebrated with devotion, yet, according to him, many skilled individuals and economic opportunities seem to be concentrated abroad. He suggested that this contrast raises important questions about the nation’s focus on education and development.
Soren also remarked that discussions around rituals often overshadow conversations about improving education standards. He questioned how India could achieve the goal of becoming a global leader if such issues remain unaddressed.
BJP Alleges Insult to Religious Sentiments
The BJP reacted strongly to these statements, accusing the Chief Minister of disrespecting Hindu traditions. State BJP President and Rajya Sabha MP Aditya Sahu claimed that the remarks were insensitive and hurt the sentiments of millions of people.
Sahu alleged that referring to major festivals such as Saraswati Puja, Lakshmi Puja, Vishwakarma Puja, and Ram Navami in such a manner was inappropriate for someone holding a constitutional position. He further accused Soren of echoing similar positions taken by senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
According to Sahu, leaders in positions of authority are expected to uphold respect for all faiths. He also criticised what he described as “appeasement-driven politics,” suggesting that such statements were made with electoral considerations in mind.
Questions Raised Over Consistency
The BJP leader further argued that Soren himself participates in religious ceremonies with his family, which he said raises questions about consistency. He alleged that such contrasting behaviour reflects political opportunism.
Sahu challenged the Chief Minister to make similar observations about other religions, asserting that selective criticism could create divisions. He also demanded a public apology, warning that failure to do so could lead to wider public discontent.
Former Leader of Opposition Amar Kumar Bauri also joined the criticism, describing the remarks as inappropriate and cautioning that they could send the wrong message to society.
JMM Counters BJP’s Allegations
In response, the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) dismissed the BJP’s accusations, calling the controversy politically motivated. Party spokesperson Supriyo Bhattacharya said the opposition was attempting to turn a broader discussion on governance into a religious issue.
Bhattacharya argued that the BJP frequently raises matters related to religion to maintain its political relevance. He maintained that Soren’s comments were focused on development concerns, particularly education and economic progress, rather than targeting any faith.
According to the JMM, the remarks were meant to highlight gaps in policy priorities and encourage a more balanced approach to development.
Broader Political Implications
The exchange between the BJP and JMM has once again brought the intersection of religion and politics into focus in Jharkhand. While the opposition frames the issue as one of religious respect, the ruling party insists it is a discussion about governance and future growth.
As the debate continues, it reflects a larger national conversation about how cultural traditions and developmental goals coexist in public discourse. Whether the controversy will have a lasting political impact remains to be seen, but it has certainly intensified the ongoing rivalry between the two sides.
