Politics – Palaniswami Clarifies Remarks Amid Row Over Kanimozhi Comments

Politics – All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) general secretary and Leader of Opposition Edappadi K Palaniswami on Thursday sought to clear the air over his recent remarks about Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) MP Kanimozhi, saying his statement had been misunderstood. He maintained that he had only referred to her standing within her family and not made any personal criticism.

Clarification on Controversial Statement

Addressing the media, Palaniswami explained that his comments were intended to highlight what he described as the internal dynamics of the late M. Karunanidhi’s family. According to him, recognition within the family is largely centered around Chief Minister MK Stalin, while Kanimozhi has not been accorded a similar position.

He stressed that his words were not meant to insult anyone but to point out what he considers a factual situation. “I only spoke about whether she receives the recognition she deserves in her own family. I did not make any derogatory remark,” he said, reiterating that his statement had been taken out of context.

Political Reactions Intensify

The remarks triggered sharp reactions from the DMK, with party leaders accusing Palaniswami of making inappropriate and unnecessary comments about a senior MP. The exchange quickly escalated into a broader political debate, reflecting the heightened tensions ahead of the assembly elections.

Palaniswami, however, stood firm on his position and dismissed the criticism as politically motivated. He further claimed that Kanimozhi does not hold significant decision-making authority within her party, suggesting that her influence is limited despite her public visibility.

Campaign Focus and Strategy

Shifting focus to the ongoing election campaign, the AIADMK leader expressed confidence in his party’s performance. He emphasized the extensive outreach efforts being undertaken by party workers and alliance partners across the state.

Describing his own approach, Palaniswami said he remains closely connected to grassroots realities. He pointed out his background as a farmer, stating that he is accustomed to working in challenging conditions, whether under intense heat or heavy rain.

“Our objective is clear—to bring our party back to power,” he said. “We are meeting people directly, explaining what we have achieved and pointing out the shortcomings of the current government. The response from the public has been encouraging.”

Dispute Over Governance Claims

Palaniswami also rejected claims made by the DMK regarding its governance record. He argued that the ruling party’s assertions do not reflect the ground situation and insisted that voters are aware of the issues affecting them.

At the same time, he criticized Kanimozhi for what he described as her frequent public statements, questioning her role within the party structure. According to him, despite lacking formal responsibilities, she continues to be vocal on political matters.

Kanimozhi’s Earlier Remarks

The controversy comes shortly after Kanimozhi’s own comments targeting the opposition. While campaigning for DMK candidates, she had framed the Jolarpet constituency contest as a crucial moment to protect the self-respect of Tamil Nadu, underscoring the importance of the election.

Her remarks were seen as a direct appeal to voters, positioning the election as more than just a political contest but as a matter of regional pride and identity.

Key Dates for the Election

The Tamil Nadu assembly elections are scheduled to take place on April 23, with counting of votes set for May 4. Both major parties have intensified their campaigns in the final stretch, aiming to secure maximum support across constituencies.

As the political discourse sharpens, exchanges between leaders from both sides are expected to continue, reflecting the competitive nature of the electoral battle.
