Politics – Opposition Targets Kangana Ranaut Over Remarks on Rahul Gandhi
Politics – The political dispute sparked by comments from BJP MP Kangana Ranaut on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi continued to intensify on Thursday, drawing sharp reactions from several Opposition leaders who chose to dismiss her statements rather than engage directly.

The controversy began after Ranaut criticised Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, questioning his conduct during parliamentary proceedings. She contrasted his behaviour with that of his sister, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, describing Priyanka as composed while alleging that Rahul’s actions made women uneasy in Parliament.
Opposition leaders dismiss remarks as attention-seeking
Leaders from various Opposition parties downplayed Ranaut’s comments, suggesting they were made to attract publicity. Congress MP Sukhdeo Bhagat alleged that the BJP leader was attempting to gain political visibility and recognition within her party.
Bhagat remarked that responding to such statements would only give them unnecessary importance. He added that her comments lacked substance and did not merit serious consideration. Drawing a metaphor, he cautioned against criticising others while ignoring one’s own shortcomings.
Independent MP from Purnia, Pappu Yadav, echoed a similar sentiment, urging people to simply ignore such remarks instead of amplifying them further.
Criticism from regional party representatives
Members of regional parties also reacted critically. NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) MP Fauzia Khan said she found the remarks surprising and not worth a serious response. She suggested that such comments could be dismissed lightly rather than debated extensively.
Samajwadi Party MP Rajeev Rai also questioned Ranaut’s credibility in political discussions. He pointed out that her style of speaking often creates discomfort, both within Parliament and among the media. According to him, such factors contribute to why her statements are not taken seriously by many.
Rai further referred to her past controversial remarks, implying that they have affected how her opinions are perceived in political circles.
BJP defends position, criticises Rahul Gandhi
Amid the criticism directed at Ranaut, the BJP shifted focus to Rahul Gandhi’s conduct, accusing him of not fulfilling the expectations associated with his role as Leader of Opposition.
Bihar BJP President Sanjay Saraogi said that Gandhi’s behaviour, both inside and outside Parliament, lacks the seriousness required for someone in such a key position. He emphasised that as the leader of the principal Opposition party, Gandhi’s actions should reflect responsibility and maturity.
Saraogi also expressed concern over Gandhi’s public statements, particularly during sensitive times, claiming they do not align with national priorities. He argued that in opposing the ruling party, Gandhi sometimes appears to be undermining broader national interests.
Ongoing political tensions
The exchange highlights the continuing friction between the ruling party and the Opposition, where personal remarks often escalate into wider political debates. While Opposition leaders have largely chosen to dismiss Ranaut’s comments as inconsequential, the BJP has used the opportunity to question Rahul Gandhi’s leadership and conduct.
Such episodes underline the increasingly confrontational tone of political discourse in India, where individual statements quickly become flashpoints for broader partisan disagreements.
