Politics – Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar on Monday levelled sharp allegations against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, claiming that illegal cross-border infiltration is being allowed to continue for political advantage. He described the issue as a matter of national concern, warning that unchecked entry of foreign nationals could have long-term security implications.
Allegations Over Infiltration and Political Motives
Speaking at an event attended by members of the Bengali community in Hyderabad, Kumar accused the West Bengal government of turning a blind eye to infiltration from neighboring countries. According to him, such actions are driven by electoral considerations, with the intention of consolidating a specific voter base.
He further stated that attempts by the central government to enhance border security infrastructure, including fencing, are not being fully supported at the state level. Kumar suggested that gaps in coordination are making it difficult to effectively monitor and control unauthorized crossings along sensitive border areas.
Appeal to Bengali Community
During his address, Kumar called upon Bengali residents living outside West Bengal to stay connected with their families back home. He encouraged them to engage in discussions about the political situation in the state and advocate for change if they feel governance standards are declining.
He emphasized that public awareness and participation are essential in shaping the future of any state. By maintaining close ties with their roots, he said, communities can play a role in influencing democratic outcomes.
Migration Linked to Governance Concerns
The minister also pointed to what he described as a growing trend of migration from West Bengal to other states, including Telangana. He claimed that several families have relocated in search of better opportunities and improved living conditions.
According to Kumar, this movement reflects deeper issues related to governance, law and order, and economic stability. He argued that residents are increasingly seeking environments that offer security, consistent administration, and reliable public services.
Claims Regarding Earlier Settlement Policies
Kumar further alleged that prior to 2014, Hyderabad witnessed a notable influx of individuals entering the country illegally from Bangladesh and other neighboring regions. He accused previous state governments, including those led by Congress and the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), of facilitating their settlement.
He claimed that these individuals were provided with essential documents such as ration cards and voter identity cards, enabling them to integrate into local systems. Such actions, he argued, raise concerns about administrative oversight and the integrity of official records.
