Politics – The political landscape in Assam has taken a notable turn as Lok Sabha MP Pradyut Bordoloi resigned from the Congress and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the upcoming state assembly elections. The move has triggered reactions from leaders across parties and added a new dimension to the electoral battle in the state.
BJP Welcomes New Entrant
BJP leader NV Subash described Bordoloi’s decision as a significant gain for the party. According to him, the growing number of leaders from different backgrounds, including opposition parties, joining the BJP reflects public trust in the party’s governance and direction.
He also indicated that Bordoloi’s departure from Congress suggested dissatisfaction within the party. Subash stated that the BJP is open to welcoming leaders who wish to contribute to its political vision and development agenda.
Resignation Marks End of Long Congress Association
Pradyut Bordoloi formally resigned from the Congress by submitting his letter to party president Mallikarjun Kharge. His decision ended a long-standing association with the party, which he described as an important part of his political journey.
Speaking to reporters, Bordoloi acknowledged that the decision was difficult and emotional. He said leaving the party went against principles he had upheld for years, but circumstances within the organization had made it increasingly challenging for him to continue.
Allegations of Internal Issues Within Congress
Bordoloi cited internal challenges and a lack of support from party leadership as key reasons behind his resignation. He claimed that he faced repeated instances of disrespect and felt isolated within the party structure, particularly in Assam.
He also referred to a meeting of the Assam Central Election Committee, where his concerns regarding a candidate were reportedly dismissed. Bordoloi alleged that his claims about the candidate’s alleged links to unlawful activities were not taken seriously and were described as baseless by senior party members.
These developments, according to him, contributed to a sense of frustration and ultimately led to his decision to leave Congress.
Congress Calls Move Unfortunate
Reacting to the development, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President Gaurav Gogoi termed Bordoloi’s exit as unfortunate. He emphasized that the upcoming 2026 Assam Assembly election is focused on addressing governance issues and presenting an alternative to the current administration.
Gogoi reiterated that the party remains committed to its broader political goals in the state despite the departure of one of its MPs.
Electoral Battle Intensifies in Assam
The timing of Bordoloi’s move is significant, as Assam prepares for assembly elections scheduled for April 9, with vote counting set for May 4. All 126 constituencies will go to polls in a single phase.
The contest is expected to be closely watched, with the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance seeking a third consecutive term under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Meanwhile, the Congress is aiming to regain political ground and return to power in the state.
Bordoloi’s entry into the BJP is likely to influence local political dynamics and campaign strategies as both major parties intensify their efforts ahead of the elections.
