Parliament – Rajya Sabha Members Show High Wealth and Criminal Records

Parliament – A recent assessment of members in the Rajya Sabha has revealed notable insights into their financial standing and legal backgrounds, highlighting a mix of significant wealth and pending criminal cases among lawmakers.

Wealth Distribution Among Members

The analysis shows that a considerable number of Rajya Sabha members possess substantial financial assets. Out of the total strength, 31 members—about 14 percent—have declared assets running into billions of rupees. These individuals come from multiple political parties, reflecting a broad distribution of wealth across the political spectrum.

Among major parties, six members from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are part of this group, while the Congress accounts for five such MPs. The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) has four members with assets exceeding Rs 100 crore. Both the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) have two members each in this category, while three members from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) also fall into this high-asset bracket.

Criminal Cases Among MPs

The report further highlights the prevalence of criminal cases among sitting members. According to the data, 73 out of 229 analysed MPs, which is approximately 32 percent, have declared criminal cases against themselves. Of these, 36 members, or about 16 percent, are facing serious charges.

The serious cases include allegations such as murder, attempted murder, and crimes against women. Specifically, one MP has declared a murder case, four are facing charges of attempted murder, and three have cases related to offences against women.

Party-Wise Breakdown of Cases

When examined across political parties, the data shows varying levels of representation. Among BJP MPs, 27 out of 99 have declared criminal cases. The Congress has 12 such MPs out of 28 members. In the Trinamool Congress (TMC), four out of 13 MPs have reported criminal cases, while the AAP has four out of 10 members in a similar situation.

Additionally, three members each from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Bharat Rashtra Samithi have also disclosed pending criminal cases in their affidavits.

Average Wealth Across Parties

The financial disclosures also provide insight into the average assets held by MPs from different parties. On average, a Rajya Sabha member has declared assets worth Rs 120.69 crore.

Among major political parties, BJP MPs report an average asset value of Rs 28.29 crore, while Congress MPs have an average of Rs 28.61 crore. Trinamool Congress MPs report comparatively lower average assets at Rs 7.70 crore.

In contrast, some parties show significantly higher averages. AAP MPs have an average asset value of Rs 574.09 crore, followed by YSRCP MPs at Rs 522.63 crore. The Samajwadi Party averages Rs 399.71 crore per MP, while the Biju Janata Dal stands at Rs 105.63 crore. DMK MPs report an average of Rs 11.90 crore.

Highest and Lowest Asset Holders

The report also identifies the wealthiest and least wealthy members in the Rajya Sabha. BRS MP Bandi Partha Saradhi tops the list with declared assets exceeding Rs 5,300 crore. He is followed by AAP member Rajinder Gupta, who has assets of more than Rs 5,053 crore, and YSRCP MP Alla Ayodhya Rami Reddy with over Rs 2,577 crore.

At the other end of the spectrum, AAP MP Sant Balbir Singh has declared assets of approximately Rs 3 lakh, making him the least wealthy member in the House. He is followed by Maharaja Sanajaoba Leishemba from Manipur with assets of around Rs 5 lakh, and TMC MP Prakash Chik Baraik with assets close to Rs 9 lakh.

Broader Observations

The findings are based on affidavits submitted by 229 out of 233 Rajya Sabha members, including recently elected representatives. The data reflects the diversity in financial status and legal backgrounds within the Upper House of Parliament, raising ongoing discussions about transparency, accountability, and electoral reforms in India.
