Parliament – Harivansh Renominated to Rajya Sabha After Term Ends
Parliament – In a notable move that comes amid ongoing uncertainty about his political future, Harivansh Narayan Singh has been nominated once again to the Rajya Sabha by President Droupadi Murmu. The decision was made late Thursday evening, just as his previous term in the Upper House came to an end on April 9.

Nomination Fills Vacancy in Upper House
The fresh nomination has been made under the President’s quota, filling a vacant seat that arose following the retirement of former Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi. With this development, Harivansh secures his third consecutive term in the Rajya Sabha, ensuring his continued presence in parliamentary proceedings.
His renomination carries significance, particularly because it follows the conclusion of his second term as a representative from Bihar. The move also highlights the flexibility of the nomination route, which allows experienced individuals to return to the House even when they are not re-elected through party channels.
Oath Ceremony Conducted in Presence of Senior Leaders
Shortly after receiving the nomination, Harivansh was sworn in as a member of the Rajya Sabha on Friday. The oath was administered by Chairman C P Radhakrishnan, and he chose to take it in Hindi.
The ceremony was attended by several senior leaders, including Leader of the House J P Nadda, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Minister of State for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal, and Minister of State for Agriculture Ram Nath Thakur. Their presence underscored the importance of the occasion and the political weight attached to his return.
Questions Over Deputy Chairman Position
While his entry into the Rajya Sabha has been confirmed, questions remain about whether Harivansh will continue as the Deputy Chairman of the House. He has held the position in the past and is widely regarded as an experienced parliamentary figure.
However, speculation persists because his party, the Janata Dal (United), did not nominate him for another term through its own quota. This has led to uncertainty about his future role within the Upper House leadership structure, even though his parliamentary membership has now been secured through nomination.
Long Political and Journalistic Career
Harivansh, 69, has had a diverse career spanning journalism and politics. Before entering active politics, he was a respected journalist. Over the years, he built a reputation for his understanding of public affairs and governance.
In the political arena, he has been closely associated with JD(U) leader and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. His earlier elections to the Rajya Sabha were through the party’s support, reflecting his strong ties within the political establishment in Bihar.
Nitish Kumar’s Entry Adds New Dimension
In another significant development on the same day, Nitish Kumar also took oath as a Rajya Sabha member. This marks his first term in the Upper House.
His move to the Rajya Sabha is being closely watched, as it may signal a major political shift in Bihar. Reports suggest that he could step down as Chief Minister, potentially creating space for the Bharatiya Janata Party to appoint its own leader to head the state government.
Political Implications Going Forward
Harivansh’s nomination ensures continuity in parliamentary experience, but it also raises broader political questions. His future as Deputy Chairman, the role of JD(U) in national politics, and the evolving political scenario in Bihar are all areas that will be closely monitored in the coming days.
At the same time, Nitish Kumar’s transition to the Rajya Sabha could reshape alliances and leadership equations in the state. Together, these developments highlight a period of transition both in Parliament and in Bihar’s political landscape.
