The party alleged that the Prime Minister’s recent remarks go beyond political debate and attempt to undermine the state’s image and its elected leadership.
TMC Responds to Prime Minister’s Public Remarks
In a statement shared on social media, the TMC expressed concern over what it described as a shift in tone by the Prime Minister. According to the party, earlier criticisms were largely confined to election rallies, but have now extended to broader national forums, including televised events. The party rejected the characterisation of the state government as “ruthless,” asserting instead that its administration prioritises welfare and inclusivity.
The TMC maintained that governance in West Bengal is focused on public service and dignity, countering the Prime Minister’s claims with its own assessment of state-led initiatives.
Questions Raised Over Welfare Schemes
The party also challenged the Centre’s stance on several flagship schemes. It questioned why West Bengal should adopt Ayushman Bharat when the state already runs its own healthcare programme, Swasthya Sathi, which it says covers a significantly larger population without restrictive eligibility conditions.
TMC leaders argued that the state’s scheme provides broader access and is fully funded by the state government, making it more inclusive for residents. They suggested that adopting a central scheme would not necessarily improve coverage or efficiency.
Dispute Over Housing Funds
A key point of contention highlighted by the TMC was the alleged withholding of funds under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. The party claimed that over ₹24,000 crore meant for housing projects in West Bengal has not been released, affecting more than one million families awaiting assistance.
The TMC further questioned the absence of a detailed financial report from the Centre regarding fund allocation to the state since 2021. It argued that transparency on this issue would clarify whether the claims made by the Centre are accurate.
Concerns About Tea Garden Worker Support
The party also raised concerns about financial support promised to tea garden workers. Referring to an earlier announcement of a ₹1,000 crore package, the TMC alleged that no funds have been disbursed so far. It questioned the delay and called for clarity on the status of the commitment.
According to the party, such delays impact vulnerable communities that depend heavily on government assistance for livelihood and welfare.
Prime Minister Criticises State Government at Summit
The remarks from the Prime Minister came during a media summit, where he criticised the West Bengal government’s performance. He described the administration as obstructing development and placing political priorities above public welfare.
The Prime Minister stated that the Centre has invested substantially in the state over the past decade but claimed that progress has been hindered due to what he termed ineffective governance. He pointed to several central schemes, including housing, healthcare, and energy initiatives, alleging that their implementation has been delayed or stalled in the state.
Broader Political Context
In addition to his comments on West Bengal, the Prime Minister also criticised previous central governments led by the Congress party. He referred to financial decisions taken in the past, particularly the issuance of oil bonds, which he said created long-term fiscal challenges. He added that his government has taken steps to manage these liabilities.
