Navratri – Devotees Mark Chaitra Navratri With Faith Across India
Navratri – The first day of Chaitra Navratri saw a surge of devotees visiting temples across the country on Thursday, as the nine-day festival began with traditional rituals and deep spiritual fervour. From early morning, people gathered at various shrines to offer prayers and seek blessings from Goddess Durga, marking the start of one of the most significant Hindu festivals.

Large Gatherings at Major Temples
In Uttar Pradesh, Varanasi witnessed a heavy influx of worshippers at the Shri Durgakund Temple, where devotees queued up from dawn to participate in the opening day rituals. The atmosphere was filled with devotion as chants and prayers echoed through the temple परिसर.
Similarly, in Jammu and Kashmir, persistent rainfall did not deter pilgrims from reaching Katra. Many began their journey to the revered Vaishno Devi shrine early in the day, demonstrating unwavering faith despite challenging weather conditions.
One devotee expressed gratitude, saying it was a blessing to begin the fast and visit the shrine on the very first day, adding that such opportunities felt like a divine calling each year.
Celebrations Across Metropolitan Cities
Major cities also witnessed a strong turnout. In Delhi, temples such as Jhandewalan and Chhatarpur were filled with devotees participating in prayers and aartis. In Mumbai, the Mumba Devi Temple also saw large crowds seeking blessings at the start of the festival.
The sound of temple bells and devotional hymns marked the beginning of the celebrations, creating a spiritual atmosphere in these religious centres.
Leaders Extend Greetings on Auspicious Occasion
Public figures also shared their wishes on the occasion. BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj extended greetings to citizens, expressing hope that the blessings of Goddess Durga bring prosperity and well-being to all.
In Uttarakhand, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami conveyed his greetings for both Chaitra Navratri and the Hindu New Year. He highlighted the festival as a reflection of India’s cultural heritage and its deep-rooted traditions of worshipping Shakti.
Emphasis on Women’s Empowerment and Spiritual Growth
According to an official statement, the Chief Minister underlined the symbolic importance of Kanya Pujan, a ritual performed during Navratri, as a representation of respect and empowerment of women in society. He also noted that the festival encourages self-discipline and spiritual purification.
Dhami further stated that worshipping Goddess Durga during this period is believed to remove negative influences and promote positivity, aligning with teachings found in ancient scriptures.
Restrictions Imposed in Religious Areas
In Madhya Pradesh’s Maihar region, authorities have announced restrictions during the festival period. The district administration has banned the sale and purchase of meat, fish, and eggs within the Maihar Nagar Palika area from March 19 to March 27.
Local officials explained that the decision was taken in view of the city’s religious importance and the large number of pilgrims expected during the Navratri fair. Authorities have warned that violations of the order will lead to legal action.
Significance of the Nine-Day Festival
Chaitra Navratri marks the beginning of the Hindu New Year and is dedicated to the worship of the nine forms of Goddess Durga. Over the course of nine days, devotees observe fasts, perform rituals, and participate in prayers seeking health, prosperity, and peace.
The festival concludes with Ram Navami, which commemorates the birth of Lord Ram. During this period, temples across the country host special events, including devotional singing, night vigils, and cultural programs, drawing large gatherings of worshippers.
