Mumbai – Family Injured After Speeding Luxury Car Crashes Inside Coastal Road Tunnel
Mumbai – Three members of a single family were injured early Sunday after a high-end car, allegedly driven at excessive speed by a 17-year-old boy, crashed into two vehicles inside the Coastal Road tunnel in south Mumbai, according to police officials. The incident occurred during low-traffic hours, but the force of the collision caused significant damage and left multiple occupants hurt.

Officials said the accident took place when a Mercedes-Benz, heading toward south Mumbai, struck a car from behind inside the tunnel. Moments later, the same vehicle hit another car travelling ahead, resulting in injuries to passengers in the second vehicle. Emergency services were alerted soon after the crash and the injured were shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Chain Collision Inside Tunnel
Police from the D.B. Marg police station confirmed that the first impact occurred when the luxury car rammed into a vehicle moving in the same direction. The force of the collision caused the Mercedes to continue forward before crashing into a second car. Three people travelling in that second vehicle, all members of the same family, were injured in the incident.
Among those hurt was an elderly woman, officials said. While the injuries were described as non-fatal, medical teams continued to monitor the condition of all three victims. Their identities have not been disclosed.
Minor Allegedly Behind the Wheel
Preliminary investigations revealed that the Mercedes was being driven by a minor at the time of the accident. Police said the 17-year-old allegedly lost control of the car while driving at high speed through the tunnel. The teenager was accompanied by others but did not sustain serious injuries, officials added.
Authorities also confirmed that the vehicle involved is registered in the name of a businessman residing in the Agripada area. The car was seized as part of the investigation, and technical inspections are expected to determine the exact speed and mechanical condition of the vehicle at the time of the crash.
Case Registered Against Car Owner and Others
Following the incident, police registered a case against the car owner, his 18-year-old granddaughter, and her 17-year-old male friend who was driving the vehicle. Officials stated that allowing a minor to operate a high-powered vehicle on public roads is a serious violation of traffic and motor vehicle laws.
Investigators are examining whether adequate supervision was present and how the minor gained access to the vehicle. Statements from all involved parties are being recorded, and police are also reviewing CCTV footage from the tunnel to reconstruct the sequence of events.
Ongoing Investigation and Safety Concerns
Police said further investigation is underway to establish responsibility and determine whether additional charges are warranted. Authorities are also assessing whether speed limits and tunnel safety protocols were breached at the time of the crash.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns about underage driving and reckless speeding on Mumbai’s expanding road infrastructure. Officials urged vehicle owners to exercise greater responsibility and ensure that minors are not allowed to drive, particularly in high-speed zones such as tunnels and express corridors.
Traffic officials reiterated that strict enforcement measures will continue across the city to prevent similar incidents. They also appealed to motorists to adhere to speed regulations and remain alert, especially in enclosed roadways where accidents can have severe consequences.
