MoralPolicing – Karnataka Police Detain Minors After Chikkaballapur Harassment Case
MoralPolicing – Three minors were taken into custody on Tuesday in Karnataka’s Chikkaballapur district following an incident of alleged moral policing that drew widespread public criticism and concern.

The episode unfolded on a public road in Chikkaballapur city when a young man and woman, both residents of Sidlaghatta town, were walking together. Police confirmed that the two individuals are friends and were going about their routine when they were confronted by a group of minors.
Incident on a Public Road Sparks Concern
According to investigators, the minors stopped the pair, questioned their presence together, and recorded a video during the interaction. The footage was allegedly used to intimidate and harass the man and woman, despite their repeated clarification that they knew each other well and belonged to the same town.
Officials said the confrontation quickly escalated into an act of moral policing, with the minors continuing to pressure the pair even after being told there was nothing inappropriate about their meeting. The situation caused distress to those involved and raised fresh concerns about personal freedom and safety in public spaces.
Video Circulation Triggers Public Outrage
The incident gained wider attention after the video surfaced on social media platforms, where it spread rapidly. The footage prompted strong reactions from the public, with many users condemning the act and calling for firm action against those responsible.
Civic groups and residents expressed alarm over the growing tendency of individuals, including minors, to take the law into their own hands. Many argued that such actions undermine constitutional rights and create an atmosphere of fear, particularly for young people interacting across social or religious lines.
Police Response and Custody of Minors
Responding to the backlash, the Chikkaballapur City Police moved quickly to identify and detain the minors involved. Authorities stated that appropriate legal procedures are being followed, keeping in mind both the seriousness of the allegations and the age of those accused.
Police officials reiterated that harassment or intimidation in the name of moral policing will not be tolerated under any circumstances. They also emphasized that public roads and spaces are meant to be safe for everyone, regardless of personal background or beliefs.
Calls for Stronger Action Against Moral Policing
Local residents and community leaders have urged the Police Department to take strict measures to deter similar incidents in the future. Many stressed the need for awareness programs, especially among young people, to reinforce respect for individual rights and lawful behavior.
This case has also revived memories of a separate incident reported earlier in the state. On November 7, 2025, police arrested two individuals accused of verbally abusing a group of students from different religious backgrounds and allegedly assaulting one of them a day earlier.
Earlier Case Involving Students Highlights Pattern
In that incident, police said around 10 undergraduate students were traveling through the Periyadka area on November 6, 2025, while visiting the home of a classmate who was unwell. The group was allegedly targeted for being together, leading to verbal abuse and a physical attack on one student.
The arrests in that case were seen as a clear signal that authorities were prepared to act decisively against such behavior. Together, these incidents have intensified public debate about the persistence of moral policing in parts of the state.
Government Stance on Unlawful Moral Policing
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah recently addressed the issue while speaking at the Police Commemoration Day event in Bengaluru. He stated that Karnataka has made significant progress in curbing what he described as unconstitutional and unethical moral policing practices.
The Chief Minister credited the Police Department for restoring discipline and public trust, noting that such actions had previously harmed the state’s image and social progress. He affirmed that maintaining law and order remains a top priority for the government.
