The unrest unfolded shortly after the appointment of Nemcha Kipgen as Deputy Chief Minister, alongside Losii Dikho, a move that sparked anger among sections of the local population. Protesters claimed the decision failed to reflect the ground realities and sentiments of communities affected by ongoing instability in the state.

Protests Begin in Tuibong Market Area

According to officials, the disturbances began around 6 p.m. in the Tuibong Main Market area, a busy commercial hub in Churachandpur. Large groups of young protesters gathered and marched toward security installations, attempting to force personnel to withdraw to their barracks. The atmosphere quickly turned hostile when security forces declined to comply with the demands.

Witnesses reported that the crowd grew increasingly aggressive, with protesters pelting stones and setting fire to tyres along the roadway. Thick smoke filled the area as traffic was brought to a standstill, creating panic among nearby residents and shop owners.

Anger Linked to Political Developments

The protests were fueled by widespread belief among demonstrators that three Kuki Zomi legislators were aligning with the Manipur government following the recent appointments. Apart from Nemcha Kipgen’s induction as Deputy Chief Minister, there were reports that MLAs L.M. Khaute and Ngursanglur were also expected to take oath in the near future.

Many protesters viewed these developments as a betrayal, arguing that joining the government at this stage ignored the suffering endured by their communities during months of violence. The perception intensified resentment, particularly among younger residents who have been at the forefront of demonstrations.

Claims of Heavy Losses and Community Grievances

Local sources stated that members of the Kuki Zomi community have faced severe losses during the prolonged unrest in Manipur. Allegations include killings in Imphal, large-scale destruction of homes and properties, and attacks on places of worship. Protesters cited these grievances as the core reason behind their anger, asserting that justice and accountability remain absent.

Community leaders have repeatedly called for political decisions to reflect the realities on the ground, warning that unilateral moves could further deepen divisions and prolong instability.

Security Forces Struggle to Restore Order

To bring the situation under control, additional security units were deployed, including senior officials from the Assam Rifles. The Commander of the 27 Sector was among those present on the ground, attempting to engage with protest leaders and de-escalate tensions.

Initial efforts to calm the crowd met with limited success. As confrontations intensified, security forces briefly pulled back while maintaining strategic positions. Protesters, however, continued to advance, resulting in renewed clashes.

Tear Gas Used as Clashes Continue

With the situation spiraling, security personnel fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowd. Despite these measures, skirmishes persisted in several pockets, with reports of security forces chasing groups of protesters through nearby areas to prevent further damage.

As of the latest updates, tensions remain high in parts of Churachandpur, and authorities are closely monitoring the situation. Officials have indicated that additional details will be released as assessments continue and order is gradually restored.
