LPG – Delhi Tightens Rules to Streamline Cylinder Distribution System
LPG – The Delhi government has introduced new measures to regulate the distribution of LPG cylinders, aiming to bring greater transparency and efficiency to the system. Authorities have prohibited the direct sale of cylinders from storage facilities, a move intended to ensure proper monitoring and reduce irregular practices in the supply chain.
Ban on Direct Cylinder Sales from Storage Points
Under the revised guidelines, Oil Marketing Companies have instructed distributors to stop selling LPG cylinders directly from godowns. Officials have made it clear that any violation of this rule will invite strict action. The decision is part of a broader effort to ensure that cylinders reach consumers through authorized and trackable channels, minimizing the chances of misuse or unauthorized resale.
Expansion of Smaller Cylinder Availability
In a parallel move, the government has increased access to 5-kg LPG cylinders across the city. These smaller cylinders are now available at gas agencies with minimal documentation requirements. Consumers can obtain them by presenting a valid identification document, without the need for address verification. This step is expected to benefit individuals who may not have permanent residence proof, making fuel access more inclusive.
Special Assistance for Migrant Workers
To support migrant workers and temporary residents, authorities have set up 11 dedicated help desks at selected HPCL outlets. These centers are designed to guide individuals in locating nearby LPG distributors and understanding the booking process. The initiative reflects a targeted approach to address the needs of a mobile population that often faces challenges in accessing essential services.
Monitoring Supply and Avoiding Crowd Gatherings
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that the government is closely tracking LPG supply levels to prevent shortages or delays. Residents have been urged not to visit gas agencies or storage locations unnecessarily. Instead, they are encouraged to rely on home delivery services, which are functioning within the prescribed timelines. This advisory is also aimed at preventing overcrowding and maintaining order at distribution points.
Delivery Performance and Booking Data
Recent data indicates that the system is operating efficiently under the new framework. On April 4 alone, over 114,000 LPG bookings were recorded in Delhi. During the same period, more than 131,000 cylinders were delivered by oil marketing companies, suggesting that supply is keeping pace with demand.
The average delivery time for domestic LPG cylinders currently stands at just over four days. This turnaround time is considered reasonable and reflects improved coordination between distributors and service providers. Officials believe that with continued monitoring and adherence to the new rules, delivery timelines can remain consistent.
