LokSabha – Heated Debate Erupts Over Motion Targeting Speaker Om Birla
LokSabha – The Lok Sabha witnessed sharp exchanges on Wednesday after Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi alleged that he had repeatedly been prevented from speaking in the House during discussions related to a resolution seeking the removal of Speaker Om Birla.

The tense moment unfolded during an ongoing debate when senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad referred to parliamentary traditions while cautioning opposition leaders about the tone and responsibility expected during discussions on sensitive matters.
Rahul Gandhi Raises Concern Over Speaking Rights
During the debate, Rahul Gandhi stood up to object, stating that opposition members were frequently stopped from presenting their views in the House. According to him, the functioning of the Lok Sabha should reflect the voice of the entire nation rather than any single political party.
He said that whenever opposition members attempted to participate in discussions, interruptions prevented them from fully expressing their points. Gandhi stressed that Parliament represents the people of India and therefore should allow space for all elected representatives to speak freely.
His remarks came as he responded directly to comments made earlier by Ravi Shankar Prasad, who had referenced established parliamentary procedures while addressing the House.
Ravi Shankar Prasad Criticizes Motive Behind Resolution
Earlier in the session, Ravi Shankar Prasad participated in the debate concerning the resolution seeking the removal of Speaker Om Birla. In his speech, Prasad argued that such motions should not be used as political tools to satisfy personal grievances.
He described the discussion itself as unfortunate, saying that the House should not be placed in a situation where the position of Speaker becomes the subject of political confrontation. According to him, bringing such a resolution reflects what he described as the result of an individual leader’s ego rather than a genuine institutional concern.
Prasad also cited parliamentary manuals and precedents to underline the responsibilities of the Leader of Opposition. He said that leaders occupying such positions must choose their words carefully, especially when discussions involve matters related to national security or broader national interest.
Opposition Members React Strongly
The remarks triggered strong reactions from opposition benches, leading to a brief uproar in the chamber. Several opposition members protested against Prasad’s comments, arguing that the concerns raised by the opposition deserved a fair hearing.
Members insisted that raising questions about parliamentary functioning was within their democratic rights. The exchange created a tense atmosphere in the House, with interruptions from both sides as the debate continued.
Chair Allows Gandhi to Respond
Amid the heated environment, Dilip Saikia, who was presiding over the proceedings at the time, eventually allowed Rahul Gandhi to respond to the statements directed at him.
Gandhi reiterated his earlier concerns, again emphasizing that the Lok Sabha belongs to the entire country and not to a particular political party. He maintained that the opposition should be given adequate opportunity to present its views during debates.
The Chair’s intervention helped restore order in the House, allowing the discussion on the resolution concerning the Speaker to continue under parliamentary procedure.
Broader Political Significance
The debate reflects growing tensions between the ruling party and opposition leaders over the conduct of parliamentary proceedings. Motions related to the Speaker’s position are rare and typically attract strong reactions across political lines, as the role is considered central to maintaining neutrality and order within the House.
As discussions continue, the development is expected to remain a key focus in national political discourse, with both sides defending their positions on parliamentary norms and democratic debate.
