LiftAccident – At least five residents sustained injuries when an elevator suddenly crashed from the fourth floor of a high-rise apartment complex in Mumbai’s Byculla neighborhood late Wednesday evening. Authorities confirmed that all those injured are currently in stable condition.
Incident Reported From Byculla Residential Tower
The accident occurred around 10 pm at Jay Krupa Tower, an 18-storey residential building situated at Ghodapdeo Cross Lane No. 1 in central Mumbai. According to initial information shared by officials, the lift is suspected to have malfunctioned due to a cable failure, leading to its abrupt fall from the fourth floor.
Residents reported hearing a loud noise moments before emergency services were alerted. Police officials said they received a call through the Mumbai Police Control Room soon after the incident, prompting immediate response efforts.
Emergency Teams Rush to the Scene
Personnel from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, local police units, and civic authorities reached the site within minutes. Teams from the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport undertaking, commonly known as BEST, also assisted in coordinating rescue operations. Ambulances were deployed to ensure swift medical attention for those trapped or injured.
Rescue workers carefully evacuated the injured individuals from the damaged lift. Authorities said the response was coordinated to prevent panic among residents and to secure the building premises while the situation was being assessed.
Injured Shifted to Nearby Hospitals
Out of the five injured, three individuals were admitted to Sir JJ Hospital, a state-run medical facility in the city. One person was taken to Balaji Hospital, while another was moved to Jaslok Hospital for treatment. Hospital sources indicated that all patients are under observation and their condition is stable.
Medical staff conducted routine examinations and diagnostic tests to rule out serious internal injuries. Officials stated that none of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening.
Preliminary Cause Points to Technical Failure
Early findings suggest that a mechanical issue, possibly linked to the elevator’s cable system, may have caused the collapse. A civic official said a detailed technical inspection would be conducted to determine the exact reason behind the malfunction.
Engineers and safety inspectors are expected to examine maintenance records and evaluate whether the lift had undergone regular servicing. Authorities have not ruled out further investigation depending on the findings.
