Kashmir: The MeT department forecasts snow and rain in starting today
Kashmir: The Meteorological (MeT) Department predicted rain and snow in J&K for the next two days starting Tuesday afternoon, hence all highways in the upper parts of Kashmir were blocked on Tuesday.

Over the following two days, the MeT Department predicts rain in the lowlands and snow in the upper elevations. The traffic department and other administrative authorities have asked travelers and haulers to heed their advice.
The Srinagar-Leh highway, the Sinthan Pass in the Anantnag district, the Margan Pass that connects the valley to the Kishtwar district of Jammu, and the Mughal Road that connects the valley to the Jammu division have all been blocked to traffic by authorities. However, traffic is still moving along the Srinagar-Jammu route.
The lowest recorded temperatures were one degree Celsius in Srinagar City, minus 1.6 degrees in Gulmarg, and – 1.2 degrees in Pahalgam.
The lowest temperature of the night was 8.6 degrees Celsius in Jammu City, 9.8 in Katra Town, 7.7 in Batote, 5 in Banihal, and 3.8 in Bhaderwah.
The “Chillai Kalan,” a 40-day period of extreme winter cold, began on December 21 and will conclude on January 30.
The Chillai Kalan holds the key to Kashmiris’ aspirations for abundant snowfall. The snowfall during the Chillai Kalan replenishes all of the mountains’ perennial water sources. Throughout the summer, these reservoirs support a variety of rivers, streams, springs, and lakes. After the Chillai Kalan is finished, the snow melts rapidly and doesn’t contribute to the perennial reservoirs’ replenishment.
It is precisely because of this that Kashmir celebrates the first snowfall of Chillai Kalan. On the first snowfall, family members and friends welcome one another to feasts.
The first snowfall of the season has yet to fall over the Kashmir Valley plains. Since rivers, streams, springs, and wells are already at their lowest levels, water problems have already affected the majority of the Valley.
