Kashmir: Fresh Snowfall Blankets Disrupts Transport and Daily Life Across Valley
Kashmir: Fresh snowfall across large parts of Kashmir on Friday marked the season’s first major winter spell, significantly impacting daily life, transport services, and connectivity in the region. The snowfall included the first snow of the season in Srinagar, bringing both excitement and disruption as roads were shut and flights cancelled due to harsh weather conditions.

Snowfall Pattern Across the Valley
According to officials, the plains of Kashmir experienced light to moderate snowfall, while higher reaches and mountainous areas recorded moderate to heavy accumulation. Several uptown localities in Srinagar saw nearly two inches of snow, whereas areas near the Srinagar airport received between three and four inches. The snowfall continued intermittently across the valley as reports last came in, suggesting prolonged weather impact.
Heavy Snow in Tourist Destinations
Popular tourist destinations witnessed substantial snowfall, raising both concerns and interest among winter travelers. The renowned ski destination of Gulmarg received over two feet of fresh snow, making it one of the most affected areas. Sonamarg recorded more than six inches, while Pahalgam received around three inches. These conditions are expected to enhance winter tourism in the coming weeks, once access routes are restored.
District-Wise Weather Conditions
Officials reported moderate to heavy snowfall in districts such as Budgam, Baramulla, Kupwara, Shopian, Pulwama, and Bandipora. Meanwhile, districts including Anantnag and Kulgam experienced lighter snowfall. Some parts of downtown Srinagar and a few other low-lying areas reported rainfall instead of snow.
Transport Services Severely Affected
The accumulation of snow at Srinagar airport led to the suspension of flight operations. Airport officials confirmed that over 20 flights were cancelled as the runway became unusable. They stated that it would take at least four hours after snowfall stops to make the runway operational again. Passengers were advised to check flight status before heading to the airport.
Highway and Road Closures
Major road links connecting the valley with other regions were also affected. The Srinagar-Jammu national highway was closed due to snow and rain at multiple locations. The Mughal Road, which serves as an alternate route to the Jammu region, was shut as well. Additionally, the Srinagar-Leh national highway was closed following heavy snowfall along the Sonamarg and Zojila axis, cutting off access to Ladakh.
Emergency Measures and Restoration Work
District administrations and police departments established control rooms and helplines to assist residents facing difficulties due to the weather. Authorities deployed manpower and heavy machinery to clear snow from key roads and ensure essential services remain accessible. Restoration of electricity, disrupted by uprooted trees and damaged power lines, was underway in several affected areas.
Weather Forecast and Advisory
The Meteorological Department indicated that the current weather system is likely to persist until Friday evening. Forecasts also warned of possible heavy rain or snowfall accompanied by gusty winds or hailstorms in parts of the Pir Panjal range, Chenab Valley, and south Kashmir. Residents have been advised to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel until conditions improve.
