Investigation – Two Brothers Found Dead in River After Being Reported Missing

Investigation – The bodies of two middle-aged brothers were recovered from the Birupa River on Thursday within the jurisdiction of Choudwar police, a day after their relative filed a missing persons report. Authorities are now examining the circumstances that led to the incident.

Two brothers found dead river

Bodies Discovered by Local Residents

According to police officials, residents living near the Birupa River noticed two bodies floating in the water and alerted authorities. Soon after receiving the information, teams from the police department and fire services arrived at the location and carried out a recovery operation.

The deceased were identified as Debasish Sahu, aged 52, and his younger brother Subhasish Sahu, aged 50. Both were residents of Mandapada in the Choudwar area. Officials confirmed that the bodies were taken out of the river and later sent for postmortem examination.

Missing Complaint Filed a Day Earlier

Investigators said the brothers had been reported missing by their cousin on Wednesday. The relative, who also resides in the same city, approached the police after he could not contact them for an extended period.

During the initial search, authorities discovered a motorcycle believed to belong to the two men. The vehicle, along with two helmets, had been left parked near the Birupa barrage earlier in the week. When no individual came forward to claim the motorcycle, police took it into custody and began trying to trace its owners.

The discovery of the abandoned vehicle later became a crucial detail in the investigation after the brothers were identified as the missing persons connected to it.

Brothers Had Moved to Rented Accommodation

Residents from the area told police that the two brothers had shifted their living arrangements about a year ago. They had reportedly sold their ancestral property in their native village and moved to a rented residence in the Trisulia locality.

People familiar with the brothers stated that both men were unmarried and had been living together. Local sources also indicated that they were not employed at the time, though investigators have not confirmed whether this had any direct connection to the incident.

Police Suspect Possible Suicide

During the preliminary investigation, officers observed that the bodies were positioned in a way that suggested the brothers might have been holding onto each other at the time of death. This observation has led investigators to consider the possibility that the incident may involve suicide.

A senior police official said the initial findings point toward that direction, but authorities are waiting for the postmortem results before reaching any final conclusion.

Postmortem Report Awaited

After the bodies were recovered, they were sent for autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Once the examination was completed, the remains were handed over to their cousin for the final rites.

Police officials emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing. The postmortem report is expected to provide more clarity about the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

Authorities are also reviewing other details, including the brothers’ recent activities and their movements before they were reported missing, to understand the sequence of events that led to the tragedy.

Officials said further action will depend on the findings of the medical examination and other evidence collected during the inquiry.
